Doesn't always work so well when shooting portraits or out for fun.

I agree completely. I shot a lot of sports decades ago, mostly high level youth soccer. It is all about following the flow of the game closely and anticipating key moments. No reaction time is short enough to save you otherwise. Especially when you are focusing a wide open 300mm lens on someone 50 feet away and moving.
