I've noticed a recent trend, where the OP seems to be contributing to the forum itself, but it's actually a comment in passing, asking to "read about it in my blog". I'm just curious if this is effective: do you click through, move on...?

I typically click through once. If I like the blog, to the bookmark it goes, if not, next time I won't click.

I'm curious about those who always move on (never click) which dominate the poll so far, is it because you somehow can detect that the stuff on the blog will be bad? or inferior to yours? or that you won't learn anything from it? or some other reasons?

Dear Will,

When my father worked in the oil industry, he had a stock reply for secretaries who, when he answered the 'phone, would say, "Mr. Blank would like to talk to you" and then make him wait until the incredibly important and busy Mr. Blank(just ask him) could get around to talking to him. He would say, "In that case, Mr. Blank can telephone me," and put the 'phone down.

I feel much the same about blog trails. I quite often post links to my site to help answer a specific question, but I very seldom direct people to my site as a 'cold call', as it were. I may be conflating blogs and sites here, but as a general rule, there's not a lot on blogs that I find interesting -- even the good ones. I regard the 'Short Schrift' on my own site (shortly to be resumed -- the webmaster has the words and pics) merely as a bit of icing on the cake, not as a blog, and I don't think I've ever promoted it.

The simple truth is that it's quite difficult to say something interesting every week, let alone every day, even if you're good at it. Look at BBC blogs, for example. Good writers -- but rarely as good when they have to fill space all the time.

Cheers,

R.

Blogs and photo sites done by people on this board tend to be higher quality, so yes, I'll frequently check them out.

I've noticed quite a few hits on my blog coming from this site as well. :)

i would normally like to see "something" from the contributor, such as a few sentences or a representative image, before i click on to a new (to me) blog, flickr location or website.

greetings from hamburg

I'm pretty sure I've looked at everyone's blog or flickr page at least once (and many times more) that has had it advertised on their RFF post signature.

I always like to see what people are up to, and I'll click on almost anything once, although relative to the present question, I will follow a trail if the subject interests me, and will not if it doesn't.

If you have a flickr page listed in your signature here, I have probably been to it. Regarding that subject, I prefer flickr to other sites, because I can get a faceful of a lot of someone's work all at once. I just clicked on a person above's site, and got a one-picture-per-page presentation. Two pix, each taking far too long to load, and I'm outta there. Short attention span, me. I don't need a fancy presentation--just show me the d@#$% pictures.

the dividing line is whether or not the blog has advertising
of any kind
if so, tis a commercial blog
and that come look at my blog thread
soon gets deleted as commercial advertising.

If the subject is interesting or the person is a frequent contributor then I may check out the blog. Also depending on timing of when I am checking threads.

I have found some good blogs and some that are not interesting. I do appreciate people putting themselves out there in the public view.

I chose "click through" but if there was a choice for " it depends" I would have chosen that.

I decide based on the tone and content of the post whether to go on to the blog.
