Dear Will,
When my father worked in the oil industry, he had a stock reply for secretaries who, when he answered the 'phone, would say, "Mr. Blank would like to talk to you" and then make him wait until the incredibly important and busy Mr. Blank(just ask him) could get around to talking to him. He would say, "In that case, Mr. Blank can telephone me," and put the 'phone down.
I feel much the same about blog trails. I quite often post links to my site to help answer a specific question, but I very seldom direct people to my site as a 'cold call', as it were. I may be conflating blogs and sites here, but as a general rule, there's not a lot on blogs that I find interesting -- even the good ones. I regard the 'Short Schrift' on my own site (shortly to be resumed -- the webmaster has the words and pics) merely as a bit of icing on the cake, not as a blog, and I don't think I've ever promoted it.
The simple truth is that it's quite difficult to say something interesting every week, let alone every day, even if you're good at it. Look at BBC blogs, for example. Good writers -- but rarely as good when they have to fill space all the time.
Cheers,
R.
