Rear lens cap for J-12 with M adapter

Maybe this should be in the DIY thread but I though more here in FSU would be interested.

The J-12 is a nice lens and I have had good results using it on my M4-2. However, I always am afraid of scratching the rear element which protrudes from behind the mount. It is not a problem with LTM cameras since it comes with a rear lens cap that fits well. However, using it with a Leica M camera and M adapter leaves the rear element vulnerable. Some use a 35mm film canister and that can be OK if it does not slip off.

My solution uses two rear lens caps for M lenses. One lens cap has the top surface cut out as in the white cross section of photo J12-5.jpg. Then another lens cap is glued on top of it with epoxy or plastic solvent. See photos.

Hope this helps some who want to use J12s with M cameras.

IMO it becomes a matter of honour to find the cheapest possible way of accomplishing any sort of customization with FSU equipment, but the solution must also work well. Being a bodger is no problem at all when your bodges possess some elegance. There's no reason I can think of why this philosophy shouldn't apply to other more prestigious marques.

I recently bought a package of six M rear caps made in India, on ebay. They cost $10, as I recall, and shipping was free. They fit perfectly. So your custom cap could be accomplished for $3.33. Not bad at all!

Hi,

There's a lot to be said for a plastic screw top from a bottle on the front of the lens* and a cut down film can on the back. And using them in public will get you lots of new friends.

Failing that buy the genuine article...
