Recalibrated meters and 1.5v batteries

I have a vintage SLR (SRT101) and a QL17. Both have been CLA'ed and had their meters recalibrated to use modern 1.5v batteries. Now both of them are overly sensitive to bright light. They seem to be accurate in overcast or subdued lighting. Someone had a post yesterday about using Wein zinc-air cell batteries in a Gossen Luna-Pro light meter. He claimed the Wein batteries restored the accuracy of the meter. Would they do the same to these two vintage cameras?

Probably, but you would have to recalibrate the meters back.

Also, they don't last too long. I got a set for my Super Pilot and they worked for about 8 or 9 months before pooping out.

It depends what the recalibration involved, the origional battery was a constant voltage battery, the alkaline batteries are not constant voltage, but that may not be your problem.
Have you tried fresh batteries.
Do you use silver oxide or alkaline?
Do you know what the recalibration involved?

Gossen make a battery adapter to replace the mercury cells with two SR44. It works and is pretty cheap.

I have been using two Wein cells in my Luna Pro since I got it last Nov. or Dec. & everything is good. The Gossen adapter holds 2 batteries. The QL17 only has one battery and the compartment is shaped for a PX625 mercury cell. The Wein cell matches the cutout.

I got a Canonet QL17 last week. I put a Wein cell in it to see if the meter worked. It did. I then handed it over to my trusted repair man in Houston for a CLA. I should have results next week. I'll keep you posted.
