and I am really excited...I have to replace the light seals (how hard???)...do you have to have a battery for this or will it work without one...I realize the metering won't work, but the camera? thanks

You can use it in manual mode, with a handheld meter.
You can? Didn't know that. I thought it was all Shutter Priority Camera unlike the Yashicas which are Aperture Priority.
So the Canon and Konica S2's are fully manual then?

First of all, congratulations! I'm sure you will love it. Great little camera, razor sharp lens.

replacing the seals is a breeze too...Jon Goodman sells them complete with great instructions!

Well, uh, if your idea of "a breeze" <semi grin> is getting all dirty scraping out and cleaning up icky black goo, I guess it is. :) :)

Seriously, Jon's kit is great, with excellent instructions. The worst part is getting all of the old ones out and the resulting mess cleaned up. It's do-able, but not what I call fun. You'll need some kind of a solvent to help remove them, and then the old seals kinda self-destruct into this amorphous blob of sludge.

It's well worth it, and the pieces of Jon's kit fit perfectly.

Congratulations bnjlosh! Great little camera! I've never actually put a battery in mine, I just use manual mode - I need to control the aperture for DOF. Enjoy the cam, and post some pics! :)

I know the feeling -- just received mine the other day. :p You can purchase light seal kits on ebay -- a little niggly to replace but not too difficult

I just didn't want to put him off his excitement! As long as you set aside some time and space, replacing the seals isn't too bad and the sense of accomplishment more than makes up for cleaning black goop from under your fingernails for hours :D

When I removed my light seals I used Goo Gone and a wooden cuticle tool. Worked pretty well. Great little camera that inspired me to get a Canon 7. I always shoot straight manual because ever since I cleaned my viewfinder I can't really see the meter. I think I got onto the wrong surface while cleaning. I have been thinking about sending it to the spa but I hate to when it probably won't affect the way I shoot with it.
