I am contemplating purchasing one to replace my older iMac, but since the screen seems to be a LCD (not glass, like the TV monitor thing in previous iMacs), I was wondering about it's usability for photo-editing.

BTW, I was elated when I saw that the software for my HP printer and HP scanner works for both Apple OS: the 9.2 and the 10.4 and higher. At least I don't have to shop for a printer and a scanner if I purchase this desktop.

Anyone here using an iMac of recent coinage? Experiences? Thanks in advance! 🙂

I use a 20" iMac (aluminum) the latest interation. I love the display. I have a 20" Dell flat panel I have had for about 18 months hooked into the iMac as well. The Apple display has better color and contrast. I didn't think I'd like the reflections of the glossy LCD, but now I do.

I switched the whole home network over from PC last month, 2 imacs and a laptop, airport express, and a wireless print server, it vertualy set itself up, a delight to use.

The only issue was some poor Epsom drivers/support thet required a Canon printer to correct

Actually the screen looks and feels like glass

I've got the iMac aluminum about six moths old and it's fine for photography.

The screen on all iMacs is glass and always has been.

But this one has got some sort of coating on the screen that means that the colors are way off if you're not sitting in front of it.

So if you wave somebody over to see your latest masterpiece photo they will see it with tons of color shift.

You have to sit them in front of the screen before they can say 'What did you photograph that for?'

On a side note: I upgraded from a colored iMac to a flat screen iMac a couple of years ago and suffered neck ache until I discovered that the larger screen made me adopt a bad posture for my vario spectacles, and I needed new spectacles just for screen work.

LCDs generally have limited viewing angles, with some exceptions. I haven't seen color shift on my 20", it appears to have a pretty wide viewing angle for a desktop. What size display do you have? Perhaps the 24" has a narrower viewing angle?

My previous flatscreen iMac was fine from all angles. That was a white one, from about two years ago.

This aluminum one is 20", and the color is very orange when I'm standing at the desk but fine when I sit down.

Thanks for your informative replies, folks! I am lucky enough to qualify for an educator's discount, and I've seen the machine (display unit) already. Hence, I'll see to finalize the deal this afternoon or next week, snow-permitting.

I think I won't be buying any photo gear this semester 🙁 ... heck, this year! That's OK, I already have enough...
