I am studying abroad in Barcelona until May. This upcoming weekend is the start of Carnival and I would like to travel outside of Barcelona to experience and photograph the festivities. But I am having trouble deciding where to go. I am more interested in taking photos than partying, so I am not sure that the most popular destinations such as Tenerife, Cadiz etc. are what I am looking for?
Has anyone been to Carnival in one of these places or in Spain? What would you recommend? I am skeptical about Tenerife, Cadiz etc. because I don't simply want photo after photo of crazy costumes and parades, furthermore, it is hard to get close to subjects in a parade.
On a side note, can anyone recommend more rural but welcoming/not hostile to being photographed destinations in Spain? I've been really inspired by Cristina Garcia Rodero's photographs of festivals and rituals. While I don't want to simply copy her work, I would at least like to see some of these interesting ceremonies and see what I could get photographically.
