My favorite strap for the past 20 years or so has been the Domke Gripper, about 25 USD. Very strong and flexible, works with both chunky SLRs and RF gear. I have 7 or 8 of these mounted on various cameras. That said, I think that the SKS slings are pretty cool!
I like the old, leather Leica straps (from the late sixties, I think; not vinyl or plastic), for my Leica M bodies. Another type I favor is the Domke strap: resilient, good and, most important, comfortable. They're wide and made out of canvas (or cotton, I really don't know). For dSLRs and SLRs I prefer Optech because they're elastic and make the camera lighter. BTW, I use an Optech with my Fuji X-Pro2, but not the same type that I put in my SLRs... I think my M5s have Optech straps too...
At Tamarkin Camera, Dan Tamarkin's wife makes some beautifully finished leather straps. He sells them in his store but he can also have one custom made (which was my case). I wanted something slightly longer than the ones he had in stock and it took about two weeks for him to call me, get my card info over the phone and ship it. Now... it holds (very safely) my Nikon S3.
Resurrecting an old thread I know but here is a solution to anyone that wraps their neck strap around their wrist:
Its my from my Duo range of straps which features a handy slot where your wrist can pass through. Its safer and more comfy than wrapping around your wrist!
