Recommendations for servicing Konica Minolta Dual Scan IV

KM have dropped out of the servicing of their scanning products and have a link to Sony for assistance. Sony don’t seem to have a handle on whether they do or don’t service the scanners even though their website notes they do.

I’m wondering if anyone has suggestions for repair/maintenance on these scanners. Name, links etc are all appreciated

Presuming one could find one - it would have to be new-old-stock, since Konica-Minolta got out of the scanner/camera business several years ago.

Dek Dan, thanks. KM's website steers you to Sony's site. You then contact Sony and they know nothing about it. So I tried this.

I'll check the forum you gave.
 
Hi Dek Dan, unfortunately I think the link you gave me is defunct. The email address you sent goes to an inactive group on Yahoo.

I'll consider aftermarket service from any sources that are experienced scanner repair operations.
 
Out of curiosity, what is wrong with the scanner? Mine developed banding issues, and I stopped using it for at least six months.

I Don't know how I figured it out, but I decided that maybe the scanner's problems were software-related. Since I was using vuescan, I simply upgraded to the latest version, and my problems disappeared completely. It was fine after that.

Anyway, if you use vuescan and haven't updated your software in a while, try that (if the problems are not some pure hardware glitch).

I take it you called the numbers above and they said they knew nothing about the Konica-Minolta Dual Scan IV?

I worry - I have the same scanner. Mine works fine (knock on wood) but I had a III that had a terrible grinding noise in the feeder and I finally had to get rid of it. Hope you find a solution!

Companies have reached a point with "customer service" where even "evil-government" bureaucracies provide better service. Whoever thinks that "market-driven service" is the best, take note while you're perpetually on hold, being transferred from one clueless soul-stripped employee to another.

Let me know, Jan, if you ever get it fixed. I've been mulling around for over a year and a half whether to sell my KM Dual Scan IV; it's flawless, and it's back in the box only because I got the Nikon Coolscan 5000.

If you're using the negative carrier, be sure that it's totally closed and it's perfectly flat!

Shortly after I first got this thing, I had one strip of negatives which were not trimmed properly and it was holding the carrier slightly open. It made this god-awful grinding noise, would not feed, and about gave me a heart attack.

Also, sometimes mine doesn't seem to grab the carrier. If I kind of push it gently in right after the point at which the scanner seems to grab the carrier, it prevents this.

Precision Camera Repair http://www.precisioncamera.com/ is the authorized subcontractor who does all Minolta scanner repairs for Sony. I'm not sure why Sony could not tell you that.

Precision Camera cleaned and re calibrated my Minolta Multi Pro about 12 months ago. They were quick, relatively inexpensive and very organized. I recommend them highly.

They have one fixed price for repair so long as there is no physical damage. Their website shows it to be $99 for a SC IV. I remember my MultiPro was a little bit more than that but not much.

I had actually accepted the fact that it was an orphan product and that it would be a throw-away item if it ever broke. I'm very glad to hear that there's still support out there for it! Thanks again!
 
@ Bill, yes Bill I did make those calls. I finally got a voicemail. Send it in and if it's under warranty (it's long expired) they will send it out for repair. Minor detail was I had to pony up $300 at the time I dropped off the scanner. Gulp!

@ Gabriel, one of the myths is the private sector does it better. Unfortuately memories are short and everyone forgot about big corporations like Bell. Remember Lilly Tomlin?

@ dmr, thanks I have been used to that momentary pause and having to give it a gentle push. Unfortunately it now seems to be unresponsive and tempermental to that nudge on some occasions. This is the issue.

@ Bob, eureka! Thanks for that. I'm going to check them on Monday. I love this little scanner and that sounds much better than Sony's $300 which is probably handling both ways plus the repair and a profit for themselves.

It's good to hear you had a decent experience. When my Dimage Scan Multi Pro died in 2006 (non-software banding problems), Precision was unable to fix it due to lack of parts though they never seemed to be quite sure whether they would get parts in the future (Sony's purchase of Konica-Minolta had only recently occurred). I eventually got a very nice buyback check from Sony that I used to buy a replacement scanner off eBay, but the whole process was a PITA as I had to ship the scanner to Precision twice.
