Red bands with DiMage IV

Hey all.

I've been scanning a bunch of photos from a recent holiday with a DiMage IV. While a lot of the shots scan well, certain darker shots reveal red bands across the image.

Does anyone know what may be the problem ? I get the issue regardless of the software I use (VueScan, or the bundled Minolta software), and there are no local service centers.

The film was Astia, but the problem presents itself with all film types (and the banding really skews the image data, making touching them up very difficult).

I've posted this on a few other forums, but a few extra opinions won't hurt 🙂

I tried one Minolta Scan Dual IV, and it produced 1-2px scratch-looking bands. I came to the conclusion that scanner was somehow broken and bought a Nikon. There was no banding with same negs.

You might want to check out a few things before giving that scanner its last rites:

- swap the cables connecting the scanner to the computer

- Run a diagnostic on the computer itself: just because it might seem to be running "okay" in general doesn't mean there isn't anything amiss under the hood. (If you're running on a Mac, use Disk Utility in the Utilities folder; for Windows, run Disk Check/chkdsk)

- unplug the scanner from its power adapter for about twenty minutes, plug it back in, then turn it on without connecting it to the computer. After about five minutes, turn the scanner off again, then connect it to the computer.

There's also another specific troubleshooting trick, but I can't get my hands on it right now; I'll see what I can do. (I owned this scanner for a few years, and only gave it up for my current Minolta 5400.)

Might simply be dust specks on the lamp of your scanner. The housing comes off fairly easy. Use a blower to clean the internals. Then check again.

I had this before with an old Epson flat bed scanner and cleaning the lamp solved it, it was a five minute job.
