The phenomena has a name. It's called "internet swarming". It's especially prevalent in China at the moment, but basically it's an online lynching that feeds off itself and eventually builds momentum until it has a life of it's own.

Something sets it off, then thousands, or tens of thousands, climb on the bandwagon. People enjoy parroting the current opinion, even those totally uninvolved with the "problem".
