The phenomena has a name. It's called "internet swarming". It's especially prevalent in China at the moment, but basically it's an online lynching that feeds off itself and eventually builds momentum until it has a life of it's own.

Something sets it off, then thousands, or tens of thousands, climb on the bandwagon. People enjoy parroting the current opinion, even those totally uninvolved with the "problem".

"I don't HAVE a Leica, and I ONLY shoot Canon, but I feel this is an OUTRAGE that they DECEIVE CONSUMERS!! SUE EVERYONE!! I'll never buy a Leica but if I did I would RETURN MY M8!!"

That's the first time I've heard anybody admit anything was ever wrong with a Canon😉

Is that, partly why the 30 D came out?

No..

The reason the 30D came out was due to one thing and one thing only.
Capitalism (aka corporate greed) 🙂

There's very little wrong with my 20D or 5D.
Could there be something wrong with a Leica M8 if I could own one? Maybe, or maybe not.

I don't have the funds to buy one (nor am I currently interested in one) so it would seem that no matter what people say (one way or the other) I'm not being swayed because there's nothing to sway me towards or away from the camera 🙂
