I have been seriously considering ''investing '' [ s if I will ever get the outlay back !!! ] in having my tired 1946/7 '' birthday gift '' ' Leica IIIc repainted in grey or black .

This will , of course , be hideously expensive - I could aquire a very nice M series for the money ...

But I do have a once in a lifetime [ starting back in September !!! ] opportunity , from an inheritance , [ who needs to eat ? ] to gather my little indulgences around me .

i have worked out that my ASdee [ autistic imp ] prefers the Leica IIIc , even over my IIIf red dial [ 'cos the shutter dial is smaller and more ''same as '' my other cameras !!! ] but likes the little black II most of all ... and the Zorki ... and the ...

OOPS !

Is this the ultimate crazzee idea ? i kind of like a ''new '' IIIc - like an over- restored car ?

Proudly, certified officially, with a diagnosis to prove it , crazzzeee dee !

Those are some really pretty examples of revamped cameras. Wow! I would be proud to carry them around. The choice must be a hard one to make. On one hand having a veteran camera with it's brassing, scrapes, bright marks, all of which hold special meaning to the owner. And, on the other hand having a camera that looks like a splendid jewel. Talk about a hard decision. That was a nice link Kim.

Regards,
Tom

Not at all, Brian had a Black SP.

You will never sell it and look after it like a child rite?

Yes Kim - those are the guys who would do it for me ...
I have nice a pair of black Leica II's with wonderfull aged patina -
but the '46/7 is just '' grey /dull /scratched and dinted on the top , not nicely worn all over - I have another with larger scrape , but it's too good overall to mess around with.

And .. it's a 60 year Birthday treat - no way would I part with it ...

anyway ... I might not be able to hide the outlay ...

You won't regret it. The finish is fantastic.

Kim, one day you'll be shooting in the sun and that camera will get too hot to touch.. that'll teach ya 😀

Bob - i kind of like the brassed of Leica M !
but the IIIc in black is fantastic - but don't think I can manage a lense too !
The black Nikkon made me think of a black Kiev from dvd ...
where will it end ?

It's comforting , though , 'cos I have all this separation / uncertainty in my head , to find that ''real '' people also want to waste money on special toys !

Hopefully, I will find out between now and Sunday. I am off the take the boat out for 4 days, (having first paid the deposit on mine) and I will be taking the Leicas with me. 😀 😀

Been here but chickened out!

Before you do make the commitment you have to decide whether the nobs and fittings on your camera will stand up to being associated with a newly painted body.

I decide not and had an old black III serviced instead.

I think that depends on the camera and the cost of the body in the first place. Just before I had the M3 done, Classic Camera in London (Leica specialists) sold a CRR repainted/serviced M3 for well over a £1000. that would certainly cover my investment.

Just do not expect to recover the investment.

OUCH!

I know they are expensive, but that is just amazing - maybe I should get my M3 DS done, hmmmmm..........................

my 1946/7 was £175 for the body .
the sole question mark is about the totally brassed shutter button , and the remains of the original London dealer's label on the back - remove or retain ?
otherwise , i would like all the knobs to be black - got spoiled by my Zorki S - avatar - heck of a lot more cost - effective though !
