After 17 years sterling service my 1290 is beginning to show its age,and I am contemplating a replacement.

The two printers I am looking at are the Epson Stylus 1500, and the Epson Stylus 2000.

Your thoughts on my shortlist would be very much appreciated.

I made great prints with a 1280 for many years. It was not easy, but it could be done. I did wear out 5 of them as I was pushing pigment ink through them while they were designed for dye ink.

The 2400/2800/2880/3000 series of printers has been around a long time with actually only insignificant changes from one model to another. They make great b&w and color prints quite easily. The inks are configured with 3 dilutions of black, 2 of magenta, 2 of cyan, and one of yellow. I am still using a 2400 and see no reason to change.

The 2000 series is a bit new and I have not used one. For some reason, they are set up with only 1 dilution of magenta and 1 of cyan but add a red and an orange ink plus a gloss optimizer. There is more than one way to skin a cat but I have no clue what the advantages of this way is.

I have never heard of a 1500 printer. Maybe just not available in the US.

Anyway, it is was me, I would get a 3000 as they are only $50 more than a 2000 Epson direct and it is definitely a tried and true model that everyone knows does great b&w in addition to great color. Now I know that a 3000 is not on your short list, but consider it. BTW, if you can find a deal on a 2880 also consider that as there seems to be no appreciable difference between a 2880 and 3000 in spite of the Epson marketing hype.

As a 3000 owner, I second Bob's suggestion. After many years of fancy ink set-up and occasional "Black-only" prints on an Epson 2200, I was very pleasantly surprised by the ease of use of the R3000 and the quality of the BW output with minimal headaches.
