In light of the new Nikon SP reproduction, the recent "Original Leica" and "Leica Prortype 2" editions, I was wondering what other cameras we might want to see in reproduction....

I can't think of any (I know so much less about camera history than some of you here) but I know y'all will have some wonderful sugestions.

So, what's it gonna be...?

Ah, I was juuuust thinking about the CL as well!

Who's gonna make us a new CL or CLE?

Get those CNC machines Rolling!

Leica M3;
Canon P;
Contax IV; (existed as a Prototype)
Kodak Retina IIIC;
Nikon F2AS;

The Tessina is STILL in Production!

I've always wanted one of those original model Fujica 690's with interchangeable lenses. But just one. I don't think I could carry two.

Does anyone know of someplace - a book, online, etc - where I could find out more information on this? It keeps popping up on me today and my curiosity is aroused. Unforturnately my google-fu has not been up to the task.

Common agreement seems to be that after Zeiss Ikon purchased the Voigtländer brand they were thinking about using the Nokton 50/1.5 as the normal lens on their Contax IV. Unfortunately seems the project was abandoned and they finally focused on the SLR Contarex ¿? 🙁

It's very fun when all these names come into game after more than 30 years and you realize that you still have Voigtlander and ZI RFs, not to mention the Nokton name, LOL !

I'm sure their original creators would be proud to see these new products 🙂

Yes I do have that book Oscar, and Zeiss did do some development of a Contax beyond the IIa and IIIa, but it was never really developed, even as a proto-type, in favor of pursuing the Contaflex and Contarex SLRs. Zeiss had patented a number of ideas and inovations throughout their history, and therefore had the technology to create many things ahead of their time. I believe they patented a coupled built-in meter in the 1930s for instance. In my eyes, they also did not manage themselves that well in the post war years. The design of the IIa and IIIa were clear advances over the II and III and at the time of their introduction they were the most expensive 35mm cameras on the market. That being said, they were "old fashioned" in design and function, something hammered home by the introduction of the M3 in 1954. Additionally, they faced strong competition from within their own house, the Contessa, Vito II and Prominent. Zeiss' reaction to the introduction of the M3 was a 100 DM decrease in the price of the Contax. Zeiss also apparently did not invest internally and upgrade their production facilities therefore their manufacturing cost were higher than Leitz's. Remember, their plants were more damaged than the Leitz plans in the war and their company was fractured with parts in West and East Germany. Ultimately it seems the choice was made to invest in the SLR systems instead of retooling and advancing the Contax RF.

All greatly paraphrased and borrowed by recolletion from Kuc.

It's important to remember the historical relationship between SLRs and RFs in those early days: RFs were considered at the time to be an obsolete design (much the same as the film/digital relationship today). Only in hindsight can we see that wasn't necessarily the case, although there still had to be some culling of the market. Zeiss was indeed poorly managed with too many competing cameras within their own company and a rather obscure marketing strategy. The Contax design throughout its variations required extremely skilled labor to produce -- labor that was not available in sufficient numbers and led to quality control problems at Zeiss and recalls. This is why a highly skilled person like Henry Scherer is such a treasure; he is one of the few people that thoroughly understands the nuances of these cameras and can properly assemble and tune them to the high standard that they were designed to be produced to -- it is why I truly consider a Contax from Henry to be better than new.

Good choices, all. But I have a slightly shameful desire for a "new" medium format folder.
Speedex R or Iskira with modern lens, Kevlar bellows, lever advance, current thread size for hoods/filters etc, ttl coupled meter,120 and 220 capable.645 to 6x9 frame sizes(gee I don't want too much, huh?🙄 )

Rob, I too have a hankering for a modern MF forlder. And there IS one, sorta; the Fuji GS645. With a good replacement bellows it'd seem a fine choice. Yet every time I see one available and think seriously about it, I back away. I like medium format, but I'm not so sure I really want a folding camera.

It seems handier for walking around than actually shooting. To be ready for that quick picture opportunity, should one walk around with the camera open and risk damage to the bellows and folding mechanism? Or suffer the time delay in getting the camera open upon need, also considering the wear and tear to that mechanism and bellows in continually opening and closing it.
