I decided to spend part of my Friday afternoon checking out Leica Demo Day at my local photo shop. It was interesting as I got a chance to hold an M9 for the very first time. I also had the chance to learn what this coding stuff is all about and just how bad it can be for the camera should a lens be coded with a black sharpie. Most importantly, since I'm interested in acquiring a wide angle lens, I got the chance to try out the 21mm lens along with the viewfinder, which can be used for several different focal lengths but which also costs ~ $500. The 21mm lens I was looking at was $2,399. It wasn't the sort of money I decided to plunk down that day. In the end, I walked out of the store buying a rear lens cap for my 35 Summicron which needed one and didn't have one, since I bought it attached to my M6.
One of the benefits for me was having the rep look at my M6 and tell me my rangefinder was in great shape. I had always wondered about that since I bought the camera used last fall.
After seeing the prices of new Leica lenses and M9s, however, I have come to the conclusion that I definitely won't be buying anything new from Leica. If I want a Leica lens, I'll buy it used from offerings in the Classified on RFF.
