Reputable U.S. Old Camera Dealers?

Columbus Camera Group

Columbus Camera Group

When I lived in Cincinnati, I used to drive up to Columbus Ohio to visit Columbus Camera Group... That was in the late 70'.

They were in an old (huge) church. There were many old glass display cases, and large folding tables of equipment. Customers would wander around, handle all the stuff, pull cardboard boxes full of inventory from under the tables and sort through tons of old stuff. I bought my first LF kit there, and my first Zeizz Ikon TLR, and a Mamiya S2a, plus a Kowa 6X6 SLR.

They are still in business, and I think they are still in the old church building.

They do sell on eBay, and this is a listing to their eBay Store inventory:

Yep.. still in the Old Church where they started. I would call it selling camera equipment under God's Watchful Eye. Now how could you get a bad deal there.

Not too far from CCG... was Midwest Photo Exchange. However, I did not spend much time there, since when I drove to Columbus, I made a beeline for CCG and hung out there until after dark, then drove back to Cinci.

MPE had a wonderful reputation as well as CCG. I pored through both of their multipage classifieds in the OLD rag paper Shutterbug every new issue.

Regarding your Perkeo....

Regarding your Perkeo....

My favorite 6 square shooter is a Perkeo ONE, that originally was fitted with a Color Skopar 80mm lens and synchro compur shutter. They must be fitted that way from the factory, as the focal length of the front standards is different, plus different color. Color Scopar is 80mm and Vaskar is 75. So a Color Skopar cannot be retro fitted to an original 75mm Vaskar. However the Vaskar is also a very good lens for the format.

The Perkeo I had a double-shot prevention interlock problem. I simply took off the top and removed all the interlock pieces. It's pretty obvious. Best little folder I have now. Sharp and contrasty.

I've had three or four of the Perkeo II models, but they either had or I encountered big problems with the film count automation and DP locks. Always made them worthwhile users by taking that gear train out of the camera. Between those and Mamiya 6X6, I never found any camera mechanic who would tackle repair of those poorly designed faulty systems. Too bad... the ruin of two great shooters.

Add to that that late model Mamiya Automats and Perkeo II's are highly overpriced. Perkeo E rangefinders are ridiculously priced, if you want the mechanism to work properly. Except for the automation a Perkeo II and E are no more camera than a "found" Perkeo I that was fitted with the Color Skopar from Voightlander.

The New York City pawnshops used to be a paradise for old cameras, but they died a slow death and there is nothing like the old-time ones in NYC anymore.

If you really have a good eye, there are excellent flea market finds all time time, and I speak from direct experience. But most of the people posting here don't have the skills, the ability to deal, and knowledge to buy from street markets and flea markets.

Some places cater to the only-mint-only-expensive crowd, and Pacific Rim strikes me as a place that has a broader range, including things for people who just want something that works (where I fall in), or maybe even doesn't work, at the appropriate price.

Altman's was great, but Altman's is gone. That's where I bought some new Canon RF stuff just after it was discontinued, but it was still available there.

Got my beater M2 off Ritz/Collectiblecamera.com a few years ago for a song. Had no issues with it other than those stated when I bought it. Pinholes in a curtain and some dings to the top plate. Fixed the pinholes myself, everything else works fine, cost me $410 shipped.
