I use Fuji X10 for the same reason with zero problems and I believe X20 should be much better.

Just to update the thread, I opted for a Ricoh GXR with 24-72mm sensor module in the end for a number of reasons, among them price, the famous ricoh snap mode, and dipping my toe in the ricoh waters. I hope for the gxr and 24-72 to give me a taste of everything a GRD 3/ 4 would have offered, but in the more flexible flavour of a short zoom instead of the 28mm fixed GRD view. I also plan to see if I potentially could get on with just a 28mm in the future, as well as tasting the GXR and considering some of the other modules before they disappear.

Thanks for all the thoughts and feesback, and should have the camera some time next week most likely, to see how it fits the bill 🙂

OP says he wants compact. So forget about Fuji X100s, Fuji X10/X20, Olympus OMD, Ricoh GXR - these are NOT COMPACT. Try Sony RX100 or Ricoh GR or Nikon Coolpix A ... Next someone will be suggesting the SIGMA DPM = not compact and slower than a snail 🙂

Hi Mike, I suspect compactness is in the eye of the beholder. For me, anything smaller than the form factor of something like a Fuji x10, I would regard as compact, and after that it is only a matter of how compact. At least, that's my own personal definition, and am sure everyone has their own. In the end, while not as compact as other offerings, snap focus (and price) of the GXR won out for me, and will see how I get on.

My personal history with compact digital cameras has not been an overly pleasant one, and my lasting impression of all I have had, is that of wrestling with the damn thing to take the shot I want. I suspect the GXR will be a breath of fresh air in this regard, and is already the big winner in the compactness stakes over my currently most compact digital camera, a Nikon D80 dslr with 35mm f2 prime 🙂

Once again, thanks for all the thoughts and suggestions offered here, they have all been food for thought, and while I've not responded individually to all, everything that has been offered for suggestion has figured in my thoughts and selection process 🙂

Just a quick post to note I unboxed my new GXR & S10 zoom yesterday, and really having a blast with it. It is very much the responsive flexible compact I was seeking when I started this thread, at least ergonomically. Now that I have mostly gotten a handle on the setup options and just about set it up my way, I hope to begin to get a grip on the image quality from the small little sensor in the zoom. I really hope Ricoh do not can this little gem!

i wish fuji would make a mini-x100s with a 1'' sensor, scaled down viewfinder w/o the evf, and ricoh-style snap focus.

There's room for a digital like that.

As critical as I've been about m43 cameras even the cheap as chips oly epm-1 that I have focuses very fast. Pair it up with a pancake and you have a very responsive, small and fast camera
