Rewinding my M4

First off, hello.

I'm a Leica newbie & I just burned through my first roll of film (Ilford) with my M4. I feel this is the beginning of a beautiful lifelong relationship. The problem is rewinding the film. The counter works fine & when I got to 36 shots I could no longer cock back the lever. When I attempt to rewind the film there's incredible resistance. Am I doing something wrong? Was the film loaded incorrectly? While shooting everything seem just fine.

You have flipped the R switch on the front side of the camera under the shutter speed dial?

I felt the same way with my previous m4. It would get really tight at a certain point. My previous m4 was newly CLA"ed so I would imagine this is normal?
