Went back at the adjustments today and got everything squared away - very happy with the results! A comment and a question.

Comment: RF alignment seems to be VERY sensitive to eye position. Maybe that's made worse for me by the fact that I need a + diopter correction lens. Whether or not that's the case, relatively small movements of my eye cause big changes in apparent RF patch alignment. I've experienced this with my Leica Ms, but not to this extent. I am guessing VF magnification is part of the issue; maybe there are other issues related to optical design (dunno).

Question: I have now spent hours reading just about every thread ever posted here on RF alignment and there seems to be two different opinions about what the two screws under the hot shoe *other than the one that's unambiguously for vertical adjustment* do. Some posts refer to the center screw as the infinity adjustment and the left hand screw (from rear) as the focusing screw, while other posts (and Rich's FAQ) refer to them differently. What's the real score on these???

Jeff, in case you're reading this, yes, the R-D1 RF is a little more prone to being thrown out of whack than an M's RF. However, it is relatively easy to adjust, and I would buy this camera again in a heartbeat - so don't get any feelings that you should have buyer's remorse. You are going to enjoy your new camera.

I am also new to RF with R-D1. My 35mm Ultron and Canon 50/1.8 are both front focusing. Just wonder if I should first try to shim the M adapter or start with RF adjustment?

Thanks,

Ed
