RFF Book

IIRC Brett/Joe Friday did most of the layout work and colour profiling. It was a huge and thankless job. Members took their issues with the printer out on Brett. It was not nice.

Whoever takes this on should be ready to expend the large amount of time on preparation and set up for the publisher. Also be prepared for a few rounds of 'texas cage match' with some members who aren't happy.

Still I was personally happy and would jump in again. I think RFF needs it. There are too many 'equipment fests' and not enough 'photographic fests' This might stir up the creativity of the rest of the RFF membership.

I've dealt with stuff like that from clients, but fortunately, I caught the problems before they went to press. A lot of people have uncalibrated screens and when i get the image it is too dark or light or the color sucks. With commercial work (product photos, etc) it's easy for me to fix them and make them look good, but these will be more fine art type images so I'll have to keep in contact with people who send me something I think needs adjusted to ensure i don't 'fix' something that was intentional.

We design the structures too and there is a large amount of planning (position and content) that we do. Typically you'd find industrial designers, people who started architecture degrees, anyone with 3D design training working alongside the graphic design trained.
The US probably has the largest community of environmental graphic designers in the world.

Blake if you decide to run with this you may recall we set up a dedicated thread here at RFF thru one of the Mods... Rover would probably recall this. No need for a flickr group it adds a second layer of complexity.

It sounds like you're prepared to run with this. Am I right?
 
Chris sounds like he's on board also. I'm kind of pumped to submit a couple of images if this takes off. I have always been more of an "image guy" than an "equipment guy"
 
Blake, IIRC there were two images from each photographer. I think it would make sense to use at least two again. One image per RFF'er seems more like a catalogue of photographers.

There are some newer members since the last book and I think they will be excellent contributors!
 
I like the idea of more people and less photos per person. I think people should only submit 'One of there very best photos'. Therefore we can get the community involved.
 
I'd definitely be interested in participating.

But with that said, I really disagree about the part about including equipment and processing information unless it's optional. Cause really, who cares? A good photo is a good photo regardless of what was used to take it.

How about everyone who is participating, submit two photos with a preferences for one over the other. That way we can plan to have 2 photos from 50 people, but if the response is good enough, then the fall back plan is to print the preferred photo and have 100 contributors.
 
I just talked to Blake on the phone, and I'll be laying it out. I'll be doing my own design partly because I am a Mac user, and the software from his company is PC only, and also because I am excited about laying it out myself instead of using someone else's design. This going to be fun! We just have to decide among ourselves how many people and how many photos per person. I think Blake is right to limit to 100 people. That'll make the book big enough. If 100 people each do 2 photos, we'd probably do 2 photos per page so that's 100 pages (plus title page, contents, info pages, etc). If we only let each person do one photo we can put 2 or 3 on a page and get it down to 40-50 pages.

What do you all think?

I can put them on my website on a page for us to look at. Like Blake said, we need 300 dpi photos at 8x10 (or close to that).

This is not amateur hour, let's make it presentable here and instead have a short bio -- as has been done in the books I've participated in that were group projects
