Hello,

The RFF EuroMeet 2011 will be in London this year, the weekend of the 6-8 May.

------------------------------------

Saturday 6th - 10am Somerset House, 12pm Paddington Station
Sunday 7th - 11am Liverpool St Station

------------------------------------

The Plan

Here it is:

- Friday

Meeting outside Royal Festival Hall (riverside) at 10:30am. We'll then head to London Fields to meet up with Simon, Lisa, Andrew and his brother and have a look about and decide to go wherever the wind takes us, no plan. Picnic for lunch, I'll bring some wine and cheese, perhaps some bread. Bring something too if you are coming out. This will be a small group, just 8-9 of us.

- Saturday

10am at Somerset House. Some of us will meet this early for some snaps outside or a wander in for the free Bruce Davidson retrospective.

Midday at Paddington Station. This is the main meetup. We all head off to Trellick Tower along the canal through Little Venice.

From Trellick Tower we head down Portobello Road, exploring any side streets that take our fancy to Notting Hill Gate, to a pub for ale and a rest (I think we'll arrive here around 4-5pm). Check the Google Map, the route is marked out.

From here we head to Barbican/Highwalks, although we may decide to go somwhere else.

There will be plenty of stalls selling food along the way, so you don't need to go hungry.

Unfortunately, I won't be doing the normal bar/street drinking, running away from violence, staying up until there is absolutely nowhere to go but bed but I'm sure there will be some :)

- Sunday

Meet at Liverpool Street Station at 11am. Spitalfields, Brick Lane, and surrounds. There is a Bangladeshi festival going on as well as the usual stuff.

There is an amount of walking involved, remember to bring sensible shoes. I'll bring blister plasters and a bottle of cheap whisky for anyone who needs them.

------------------------------------

The premise of these meets is to take our lead from members native to the places we visit, so that we see those {dirty, interesting, dark} little corners that are not in the guide books or those that are, from a different perspective.

Personally, I was a bit hesitant when deciding to go to my first meet, I thought it'd be full of blokes massaging their Noctilux's laughing at my Zorki 4 and lack of knowledge about apertures and film loading.
But, at each EuroMeet, everyone has been super friendly and nice and everyone has gotten on really well. Perhaps if the United Nations were into rangefinders the world would be ok.

There is no strict organisation, no hierarchy and no rules. If you take a photo of someone who then drags you away in to a gimp den, we will make sure your gear is safe until you come back.

Here are the threads for the previous years:

Nico's Original

Florence 2010

Barcelona 2009

Berlin 2008

Paris 2007

NOTE: Don't be worried about the problems with the Police and photographers that have been in the news over the past few years. It is hyped up, you are extremely unlikely to have any trouble taking photos of anyone in London - it is a capital city and cameras are a common sight.

OK Im in I can put up someone from another nation if they do not mind being an hour away. What be the dates?

We should discuss dates, 6-8 May is pencilled in as it is good for flight/train/bus prices but a later weekend in May could also work.

Thanks Joe !

I'm in too, barring unfortunate surprises.

Well done Kully, Nico, Simon et al for keeping the ball rolling.

I now have this image of photographers being lured in to a shady room to edit pictures using the Gnu Image Manipulation Program . . . is there another meaning to 'gimp' ?? (Apart from the weaving accessory).

Someone hasn't been watching his Pulp Fiction... :D
Good thing about the gear, though. You guys had me worried for a sec.

PS: I'd love to come, but have to clear it with The Calendar.

It's early days, but count me in. Obviously whereabouts in London needs to be decided, but it's about time I met some more photographers.

The 350D's being left at home this time. As for the 50D... ;)

I'm interested, and a local so can help with ideas.

One thought is to do a circle along the Thames - start and finish at, say Tower Bridge, then head along the south bank through Borough Market, Bankside, Tate Modern, along to the London Eye. Then cross over to Charing Cross, Fleet Street, Temple, City and Tower. Quite a long walk though, but lots of interest and places to see.

Another suggestion would be the east end around Spitalfields and Brick Lane - lots of interesting sights, good street activity and markets. A bit more concentrated area than the first suggestion.

Interested to hear other suggestions.

The Thames route is very interesting, especially for those that are interested in modern architecture, :D:D, its one of my favorite routes given my love of brutalist concrete structures.

London is perfect!
yep is early..but i'll do my best to join the meeting see old friends and meet new RFFers!

Be nice to finally meet Lluis. :)

If your planning to do the Thames area there's a pretty reasonable Premier inn at Southwark. It's near Borough Market on the south bank not too far from the Tate Modern. I've stayed in it before it's a good location.

ETA: Not as cheap as it used to be. About £125 per night in May. :(
