RFF EuroMeet, Florence, April 10-11 2010

Hope your booking went well Simon, although remember the trains from Bologna (to Florence) seem to take ~37 minutes and the trains from Pisa take between 1 and 1.5 hours.

Now, does anyone know what time the bars/pizzerias close on a Wednesday in Pisa? We arrive there about 1am Thursday morning.

...but I'm a tightwad Kully so a cheap seat on Ryanair and a longer train journey doesn't bother me too much, besides I'm enough of a geek to enjoy train journeys and like photographing them - so I'll bring some extra film just for that.

Still haven't had a chance to book yet but I'm on my way home so should be able to sort it this afternoon.

If anyone else is coming via Pisa around the same time and wants a travelling companion let me know, I'll post my travel arrangements once they're confirmed.

Hi,
I added Trattoria Gozzi in the shared map,
sorry for thinking about food already, I am for enogastronomic touring.. :D
One of my friends from FLorence told me that another VERY nice
place to eat is La Pentola dell'Oro (translated is like "The pot of Gold"),
it's site is: http://www.lapentoladelloro.it/
they have an online menu (strange these days..).
this friend told me that they have medieval and renaissance cooking.

The first place (Gozzi) has Tuscany's typical food,
I have been about two years ago there and I ate a fantastic
ribollita (it's a soup of black cabbage, beans, and some other thing) with maize flour that I had to reproduce home because
it was delicius.

ehm..
maybe I talked too much..

Matteo

Not at all Matteo, I was wondering whether I'd messed up the shared map as no-one was adding anything to it.

?!?!?! It's only about seven or eight weeks to go or something. I will look at flights this weekend. Probably to Pisa, then train/coach, errrrmmm. So I'm a "definite maybe", and I'll be happier this time 'cos my knee feels better, and I'll bring more film too.
My request for a few days off work has been turned down as the 3 1/2 month late external contractors have decided to deliver a huge 'thing' on the 6th.April. My last day off was In November 2009 and I worked, including weekends, all through the last two weeks of November, all December and the first week of January with just the two Christmas days and New Years day off (because they are obligatory). Guess who is now quietly searching for another job :bang:

Ooops, it was late at night and I had worked extra hours again. I forgot to write that I hope everyone has fun and that the weather is great. I look forwards to seeing the photos :)

that sucks MartinP. changing job is refreshing, wish the markets would improve from the current.

regarding the meet in April, am on the fence should I join. place would be very interesting and I've never been in such occasion before. but am uncertain will schedules work out. difficult to commit to come.

Martin, that's not so good. Are you planning to go "Falling Down" on their collective bottoms?

Jarno, no worries - there is no need to commit, it's all very disorganised. But do say if you decide to come (whenever that is) so I can grab your email and mobile number.

Finally, I've managed to book my flights and hotel.

I'll be staying here; http://www.laterooms.com/en/hotel-directions/158998_affittacamere-alba-firenze.aspx

Very cheap, very decent and pretty central...close to the SMN station too if anyone else is looking for a place to stay.

I'm flying into Pisa at 09:45 on the 9th so if anyone else is doing similar and wants a travelling companion for the train journey just PM me and we can go from there.

Nico is currently figuring out where (a possible) 21 of us will meet on the Saturday morning. It appears the cafe's in Florence are on the small side.

Well, we can always occupy an entire street  (on both sides).. :)

After skimming and reading many of the posts of this thread, I'd like to clarify what's planned: This is a gathering of rangefinder camera users and not a conference or formal meeting. There isn't an agenda, nor reserved meeting rooms. It's just people active on this site and interested in rangefinder cameras converging in Florence, Italy for a couple of days and spending time together--not necessarily all together, but maybe in clusters. Am I right in these assumptions?

I'm asking this because I'm wondering if I should attend, given I don't know anyone here. I'm new to using rangefinder cameras and very new to this forum and web site. If it was an organized event with presentations, tutorials, vendors showing their goods, then I would definitely want to participate. It would help me to learn more about rangefinder cameras and film photography. I still may want to attend. I'm just looking for clarity and encouragement. I don't want to be standing in a piazza or in a hotel lobby in Florence wondering why I'm there alone with my camera. Florence is only a couple of hours away from me in Milan by train. I've been there a few times; I can go any time. But, I'd go that weekend primarily for the meeting. So, if you could, please tell me how one of these meetings are conducted, what transpires and if it would be of value to someone new to the group.

Thanks,
Russell

Morning Russell,

The meet is not exclusive, neither are we a group - you'd be very welcome and you certainly don't need to know anyone else here or be some photo-expert.

If you want to come along, have a chat with people who like Rangefinder photography, see how they take photos, ask for advice and tap into the huge amount of communal geeky knowledge - all over a few beers and walking around Florence.... then this is for you.

There is no-one telling anyone else what to do, there is a Swede telling Monty Python jokes, someone else complaining that we havn't had a beer for 30 minutes and someone else who is being carried away by kidnappers.

encouragement +1
I have to admit that I miss Emil's old Monty Python jokes everybody knows already. so that +1 too.
and of course beer +1

yippie =)

Morning Russell,

There is no-one telling anyone else what to do, there is a Swede telling Monty Python jokes, someone else complaining that we havn't had a beer for 30 minutes and someone else who is being carried away by kidnappers.

And all these actions will be capture in multiple film types by multiple cameras from multiple angles.
You better show up Russell, you will not find better gang for RFgangBang.
In fact, you will never find anywhere the diversity of gear that could be found on our coffee/beer tables (with exception of Zen Cafe in Vancouver :D ).
After the weekend you can always sell your gear and pretend that never happened or... buy more!

Encouragement -2 .. I guess...
