Why stress the difference between pros and amateurs? Isn't it a sliding scale? In more than one dimension?
Where, or indeed when, does one end being a pro and begin being an amateur?
And what is so special about being a pro? OK, a pro probably can afford nice gadgets to work with, but if he isn't lucky, it's shooting sausages, pizza's, perfume bottles, watches and leather salon sets. Halleluyah!
At least an amateur doesn't have to waste his negatives on commodities. Doesn't have to work to order.

Cheers

I don't know which tag I put..
I have voted for Amateur though. I did my own developing and prints in my own home dark room . Have several hi-end negative cameras of three different system. My first digital camera is Leica M and it is my back up body to Leica M negative system. I am a perfectionist in all what I do. So I don't know If I am qualified to call myself a photographer.

If this RF Forum is of more amateur photographers, I am happy to be here and call myself an amateur to enjoy of sharing all of these resourceful knowledge from all of you.

The poll question is a bit silly. It should be fairly obvious that many of the amateurs here are far better photographers than many of the pros. Likewise, many of the so-called pros have photography skills of an amateur. I believe this forum is enjoyed by both pros and amateurs alike.

I have a degree in photography, I have taught photography and I have worked as a pro. Long long time retired, but I still just like to shoot photos. I don't really call it anything or label it, or categorize it. I just think that rangefinder forum is a great place to learn and share with others whither you are amateur or pro. - jim

And without fail...

In almost every one of these threads, the point is made that no matter how many super star pros there are in the world living the dream, well by golly all folks seem to talk about are the ones who are not as good as the beloved on RFF.

Get to know some more pros....there are more better ones that you think.

Oh yeah, I voted amateur because that is what I am going to turn into if I don't stay off here....

Neither -- I am a slacker - I never developed a work ethic since missing career day in high school.

Good for you ~ I renounced the work ethic after reading Ishmael, by Daniel Quinn.

Meanwhile, back to the poll: I'm semi-pro; I try to provide a "professional level" of service, all I ask for is a donation.

Pros ( photojournalists) used to use RF more. Security concerns keep most too far away to use them effectively.

They are mostly rich amateur status now.

Amateur, no professional would use my anachronistic equipment.
Not true for art photographers. Many still use film, some exclusively. I know several who make a living in this way.

I consider myself a professional photographer, albeit it's not my only job. I have an exhibition coming up later this autumn, and my prints will be selling for between £495 and £795 depending on size – they're digital prints but from medium-format negatives.
