real world, pro photogs are probably outnumbered by amateurs by 5000 to 1 OR MORE.

100,000 to one? Every iphone owner is a "photographer" capable of having their pics go viral on facebook, twitter etc.

a six year old California boy with a smart phone had his pic carried world wide when he photographed a Condor resting in a neighbor's tree.
Most pros never get such coverage in a lifetime of trying.

Its no surprise there are more amateur photogs on RFF than pro.

Frankly, I thought I did when I came here. Shot film for a decade as a student. Photo enthusiast for a couple more years. Owned camera systems of every major brand before going Leica. There was a time when I could blind-adjust most of the settings on every Canon and Nikon DSLR.

I learned far, far more than I would have ever imagined here. My whole view of photography has changed because of RFF. And looking back I did know a lot. I just learned more here...😀

Now that you say that I guess what RFF did for me was it "cemented" photography as a hobby for me. RFF and it's colorful cast of characters said to me this is a passion worthy of pursuit. Pro? Amateur? Perhaps none of the above...4 almost 5 years on in the hobby and I still pay pretty close attention to this board and I am a much more knowledgeable and competent photographer than I would have been otherwise.

"Over" does not require a hyphen, as in overjoy, overshadow, and so on.

Or were you asking if it really possible for anyone on the RFF to "focus over-much on the details of the tools of their profession?"🙂

No, I was asking who determines when "at all" becomes "overmuch". What seems to one person a reasonable interest may look to another like an obsession.
