RFF Forum Scoops News Today: NYC Construcion Accident

I say the following as a former staffer at a major metro and a regular freelancer for the New York Times ( out of town on assignment right now actually):

If not a staffer or a regular stringer, you were under no pressure to get the shot and I find it to be......and I know I am not the only one thinking this......kind of creepy.

Creepy, KM-25? I find it kind of creepy that you would think this.

Thanks for the comments. I get flashbulbs from eBay. I have IR ones too. Would love to use them soon. John (huh) I rewrote the text -- it needed it -- still does, but not as much. Creepy? hahaha! Good one!

Dan, these are really neat. I gotta agree with the folks above, a TLR with Flashbulbs. How 1950's of you. I bet the reaction of the folks standing around, when they saw what you were shooting with, I bet it was priceless.

Thanks for sharing.

ALong with your rollei , it's Time for a pocket digi /wifi ....
when You want that work Published Instantly

Funny you should say that, Jeff at Fotocare told me I should carry the Lumix that shoots square. Oh well, the chances of getting something newsworthy are very slim.

Regarding TLR and flashbulbs -- nobody said a thing yesterday -- although other times some do.

I think I need to send you a copy of "The Public Eye" with Joe Pesci so you can watch the scene where he develops sheet film in the trunk of his car.

A very competent set of photos.
Creepy was that comment by KM-25.
The labor and effort is simply not worth it for newspapers.
A small/tiny digital so much handier and easier.
The quality more than sufficient.
The best chance of publishing, someone died..

NY Dan, I thought the original first post that you put up was really funny. I hope you didn't change it just because of what Rick Waldroup said. Maybe you can recreate it and repost it?
Your photos are great, as always.

Thanks for replies 🙂

Blkrcat -- I understand superstitions -- all the people I photographed on Tuesday lived -- so I should shoot more accidents - by that theory.

When I arrived on the site, I thought it was for a building fire. As long as I was there I might as well shoot -- I am after all a photographer -- that's what we do. And walking all day looking for photos is tough. So when one comes upon a scene with interest... As for shooting digital -- that's cool. But I can only shoot one camera at a time, and I like film. I like film because it's harder -- less shots, you don't know if you got it, no auto-exposure or auto-focus, limited number of shots, and best of all you get to imagine what you got. It's exciting and involving. Then there are more ways to screw up -- processing and such. So when you get a shot you like, you worked harder and it's more rewarding. Digital cameras depreciate, and the chance of recouping costs from the meager offerings of news outlets is a long shot. Rather just shoot for my own head. I went out shooting again yesterday. Even covered much of the same ground. Amazing how a place can feel so different one day to the next. Doubt I got any keepers -- but maybe... Did get a good hamburger at Alfies on 8th and around 53rd. Chores today, and hopefully I'll develop and scan 9 waiting rolls.

Dan, this is the type of stuff my Dad used to say to me... not about photography but about work in general. It never really resonated with me. I still don't mind something being easy as long as it works.

That seems a strange reply. But I am curious why you think so. He is obviously an accomplished photographer, and was at the scene of something unusual and worthy of documentation, if newsworthy or not (it was, just not the big news of the day for papers).

I suspect I would have taken photos, and not thought it strange, but maybe that is because I used to be a crime scene photographer.

I really am curious, not wanting to be confrontational at all.

$125 + syndication is a rip off, but this is a sign of the times.
I didn't like KM-25 response, but unfortunately with the privacy laws we have in the EU, taking pictures of EMS workers and accident victims can lead to the photographer being sued. But then the german government allows crazy pilots in a cockpit.🙄

my 2 cents
