RFF is my catharsis

For sheer mechanical joy... that's the camera, Pherdi! I have a Mamiya C220 with two lenses and the paramender and it's a lot of fun to work. Just one important tip: when shooting macro with it, give it a bit more aperture than the meter indicates, like one or one and a half stops. I'm speaking from experience here! 🙂

Oh... I did go through a short trip down the Japanese Classic RFs lane before settling for Leicas, so I can confirm that the road (to Perdition?) is just half the fun! 🙂 I kept my Canonet, though, but sold a Minolta, a Yashica and a Konica S2 in the process. My Contax G will be used for trade sometime soon, because I use it so little it's sinful to keep it.

So, former-themirana-current-shutterflower, you're just at the beginning of a slippery slope! 🙂

well, i actually am not a big fan of macro shooting. I'd like to go closer than possible with the 80-90 cm of the fixed-lens rangefinders - but i have the slr for that. However i might become one as soon as i have the almost 1:1 ratio with the mamiya...

As to the RFF, yes it is addictive too, and it was very annoying to see that it's still migrating🙂 or, nicer said, it was great to see that it's up and working again.

It was after being far from home for a month this summer that I realized how absurd I was, grabbing with me 'only' 2 or 3 cameras, thinking on the almost whole arsenal I left at home.

It's not that I've sold a lot of cameras since then, but I seriously think I've become less attached to them, sure they are nice, but they are tools in the end. Collecting things is fine, but not when each one of them can mean more than half a month or your salary.

And then, if I could find the right greeneyed readhead, I think I could just sell everything and be happy with a pinhole 🙄

Dan,

Judging from your gear list, you are a chronic sufferer of Gear Aquisition Syndrome = GAS !

Welcome to the GAS Clubl! 🙂

Actually it is much worse than the signature would suggest.

it does not include Pentax SLRs with a gaggle of lenses,, a pair of canonets [28 and a 17] on to medium format Kiev 60 & 88 with lenses from 30-250mm and a, and a and a....

wow, I wrote a readhead ¿?

either this new keyboard is yet unfamiliar to my fingers or my brain is looking for an intelectual girl 😀

but yes, a redhead and a canon p is heaven !

So what camera do you want that you are trying to talk the price down?

Can't be the F2, you just got another...

When I discovered FSU gear about five years ago, I went through a period when I didn’t feel complete unless I had a least a couple of cameras in the pipeline from the Ukraine. Fortunately, they were relatively inexpensive and I stuck to the bargain made with myself that I wouldn’t spend any more than the money generated from stuff I sold on Ebay.

I finally topped out at about 80 cameras (28 Zorki1s!). Then my excitement cooled and I sold a good share of them to finances some serious Nikon equipment. Now I’m about where I want to be in that area and I have a better balanced Soviet collection, too.

Although I shoot with the FSU gear, my primary interest there is in learning as much as I can about the different models, variations and the history of the Soviet camera industry. One nice thing is the equipment is cheap enough that if it was stolen (who would steal a Russian camera?) or destroyed, I still would have the knowledge gained from having them.

Starting at the top wouldn’t have cured my GAS. I’ve owned three different Leica Ms and although I admired the engineering I wound up selling them pretty quickly. I think the main reason from that is the price of additional lenses is always way above I consider practical. It’s all a matter of one’s priorities, I suppose.

I do think for some folks GAS verges on obsessive/compulsive and that’s not good. If you are spending money on gear that should be used for day to day necessities, there’s a problem. I don’t think there are many folks in that category. In most cases its just a bunch of guys approaching their senior years who need something occupy their time and spendable income now that wine, singing -- and whatever that other one was -- aren’t so important.🙂

...PS: in the same time i am hesitating about a mamiya c330 with 55,80 and 135 lenses + paramender...dammit

Pherdi,

Is it a plain C330 or is it a C330F or C330S model?

Solares,

The C330 has a parallax correction pointer and markings on the ground glass for exposure compensation when using the bellows... usually .5 to 1.5 stops maximum. The paramender is essential for good macro shots.

I'm kind of proud of myself... I'm reducing my camera inventory slowly but surely to the gear I actually use. The only item I have an actual need for right now is a film scanner; everything else I've been able to look at and say "But I don't need it." We'll see how long that lasts....

RJ, it's a plain C330 as far as i can tell. The owner asks 275 euro - about 250$ i think - for the body, 80 and 135mm lenses, and the paramender. The 55mm would be extra at least 150-180 euro.

Pherdi, that's a good price if it's it average condition. I've seen 55mm lenses sell for $200-250 on eBay. The paramender is easily worth $75. 135mm lenses seem to go cheap $100-150. A plain C330 with 80mm and WLF goes for $125-175.

If the foam light seals have to be replaced, the price should be less.

I've been watching auctions because I have some C330 gear I want to sell. Four years ago, I sold a C330S body without a lens for $450. Five months ago, I saw a clean C330S with the last version of the 80mm go for $133.
