RFF site characteristics

IMO, a site with rangefinder in the title should be first and foremost a site about rangefinder gear and photos taken with that gear. Everything else is secondary. There's plenty of room on this site for people to wax poetic about their favorite photogs, mood lighting, push processing, and nature shoots; but the focus here should always be on the gear. What's wrong with this place filling a niche? Don't the Germans have a saying: "everyman's friend is no man's friend." Well, I'll extend it to say "a web site that serves everyone serves no one". As long as RFF stays true to its RF core, it'll remain a great place.

I can not say there was anything wrong with the site to begin with. It attracted people, it encouraged discussion, it allowed for a brisk and interesting equipment sales/trade/swap business (at generally lesser prices than E-Bay, I will add), it promoted friendship, and all things considered...was a good design.

I'm reminded of the Ford Thunderbird. In 1955, Ford came out with a winner. They improved it in 1956, but by 1957, changes could be seen. By 1958, they had evidently decided T-Bird should be a big luxury car. So they turned it into an odd mix of the Edsel and the Continental, even including the Granada styling in the 70s and early 80s. For many years they clung to this idea. However, today the T-Bird is much closer to its original design and selling briskly again. To those who can afford them, that is. This is a very good (albeit a self-inflicted) example of the "Opening and Closing Doors" effect I first observed and wrote about over 30 years ago. If you want to hear about that, I'm glad to share it. But for right now, my suggestion would be to revert back to the RFF of about a year ago.

this is still a great forum, I hope it does not change too much.
a two tier membership system is not my favorite way to go, there must be some better way to generate some funds to help this fine site .
this happens when communities grow large in a short time.
May we never lose our great rangefinder spirit.

I'd second that. Enough said for me. Back to shooting film and concentrating on my developing my projects.
