Wolfgang, your black and white processing rocks! I'm amazed that the GRD can produce files capable of that kind of look. What do you do to them?

how is it the grdiii/iv produces black and white pictures unique in the digital photo world? i so enjoy this thread because of the photographs ...

Me too, but I'm also interested in how to achieve similarly characterful colour images, something I've yet to do. Any tips for colour processing, whether in-camera or out?

Paul, to make it clear: my B&W pictures are not OOC, but mostly converted with Silver Efex. Sometimes I use the Streetshooter presets, sometimes my own Tri-X emulation.

A few shots from a visit to Read Up in a Down Economy, a recent multimedia exhibit by "Read More" at the Ditch Projects in Springfield, Oregon. A whimsical and cynical commentary on what being un(der)employed leaves an intelligent person plenty of time to do: "read m*f* books all damn day." Clicking any of my photos will take you to my Tumblr for the others; the Ditch link color-catalogues the exhibit, plus providing info about their ethos/esthetics.

Thank you, but I do nothing special. I am using Adobe Lightroom 3.6 with the Leica M9 and the GRD III for developing the raw files. I never shoot jpg and never use the automatic b&w conversion in Lightroom. In the HSL-Panel I always reduce colour saturation to 0 and than adjust each colour's luminosity. For example: adjusting blue luminosity can open astonishing distant views in foggy colour shots in the mountains. Here you can see, what I mean:
Than I am using the Tone Curve Panel for finetuning. You need some time, but it's really astonishing, what pleasing results you can get from some boring colour shots.
Play aroúnd, it's really worthwhile! 🙂

Wolfgang, thanks for posting these two versions. I like the color version as is. Simple, elegant.. peacefully perfect. The black and white in this case seems like overreaching a bit... trying to lend a quality to the subject that's unnecessary.

I would really like to get a GRD again but I can't help thinking that the camera's a bit (dare I say) overpriced and outclassed in the current market. Nonetheless there's something about that little camera that I just love but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Figured I'd post this to demonstrate the difference between the transparency film mode and a normal RAW shot. Both were shot under daylight WB setting.

Normally I despise scene modes of any sort but this one looks very good. Although I can't quite figure out which transparency film stock it is they're trying to emulate.

Nice to see you here, dallard! I like the red filter BW. I won't be letting go of my GRDIII anytime soon. (In fact, I just bought a used Sea&Sea housing with their rebadged GX100, and the GRD just fits inside--so I expect to be taking it underwater the next time I go to Hawaii).
