first off, I posted this text already at photo.net, but there was no reaction. So... I hope you don't mind when I copy it instead of writing a new - exlusive rff - one. ; D

Hello,

I bought a Ricoh GRD plus the optional Viewfinder. Im kinda impressed by the nice "grain" and the image quality in general (for example I wouldn't have expected some sort of a bokeh. But sometimes there is one. Hurray...).

What freaks me out though, is that the fact(?) that one cannot change both aperture and shutter speed while the display is turned off. Maybe it makes sense in a way (one can't see the changes), but you know... It would be okay for me to count the f-stops while changing it.

Now you have to switch on the lcd, make your changes and if you don't want to get disturbed by the lcd while looking trough the viewfinder, you might want to turn it off. So you have to press the display button 4 times. Well.... Hurray. And then the situation in gone. Or did I ignored something which makes this easier? Or maybe a firmware update issue?

I could shoot in aperture priority, but it doesn't work that good. Maybe my cam here is broken, but the shutter speed won't get over 1/760. Even when Iso is set to 400, aperture 2,4 and raising cam in a light-flooded area. Errrrr...

It seems that, if I want to shoot in bright daylight, I have to set iso down and aperture up to get the A work. Somehow stupid, because I loose the nice grain (starting at 400) and the last bit of bokeh at f2,4.

Or I'm just talking s*** and I cannot use this camera right. I hope so, because I indeed like the images it produces. So... how do you use it?

In order to give you something to watch while thinking here're some pictures made with it:

First - GREAT pictures!

Second - I'm happy to say that it's a firmware (or settings) issue for you. With the last/latest firmware (2.40) you have the ability to show just aperture/shutter etc on the lcd and nothing else.

Under setup, I have "synchro. monitor" set to off, and at the very bottom, "info disp" set to on. Like you I normally have the lcd switched off. When I want to change shutter/aperture I only need to turn either the shutter or the aperture wheel one step and the "info disp" screen will automatically show, and then I can keep turning to actually change the values. The lcd turns itself completely off again after a few seconds, or when you half-press the shutter release button. I believe this is what you want.

So, if I know the aperture/shutter speed I can change them very easily without taking my eye from the viewfinder.

andersju,
yaaay. very cool to hear that. i've just downloaded the new firmware and installed it. it works. superb. thx. it would be perfect if in the update this "shutter not over 1/760 in A mode" was also fixed. but well...

back alley,
yep I just registered over there. but my problem is solved anyway, so... : D
