Ricoh GRD4 announcement

Ricoh's official samples look no better than the GRD III, and of course, no high ISO samples. NEX 5 is a better option by far

IQ wise, the Olympus E-PM3/E-PL3 , Panasonic GF1/2/3 etc. etc. would all be better options for most.

The GRD series differentiates itself in many other little ways.

The GRD cameras stand alone in the compact market. They may not compare technically to the large sensor compacts but they produce photos with a look all of their own...

Maybe a better option for you, but, if one wants a small sensor camera with a huge DOF for street photography, then the GRD IV is the better option — apart from the fact that the two cameras are aimed at completely different markets.

Actually a very good point, I forgot I missed the GRD III for that reason. Looks like I'm getting the GRD IV ;)

for those interested, yesterday there was an event held in Tokyo where people were allowed to test out GRD4s. some people have posted photos that they took with the camera + videos of handling the camera online.

i can attempt to translate the Japanese if anyone wants to know anything in particular from the blogs/photos/videos....

i myself am torn between getting a GRD3, GRD4 and the new Canon Powershot S100. the S100 is ultra compact, which is what i want, but the GRD has more features that i want. fast autofocus is very important to me so i'm leaning towards the GRD4, but i've found an awesome priced mint GRD3 that would save me a lot of money....

...decisions...

I realized one more issue (or more precisely, tradition) that the GRD cameras haven't addressed yet: sensor dust.

My GRD III developed two large dust specks in the past two years. Reports of dust getting into brand new GRDs after one week of normal use are not uncommon. Hope they've got better sealing this time.

Those sample photos from the users look good. I think that the colour has improved since the GRD III and I'm wondering how that translates into the raw files and Lightroom.

I've never had a dust issue with my GRD III, touch wood, and it goes in pockets, around my neck, and in the bottom of bags.

i have no idea whether or not this addresses the problem you speak of, but one of the Japanese bloggers who went to the event said that to him the magnesium exterior of the camera seems to have been redesigned. he also commented that the shape and width of the grip has been revised and that the end of the lens barrel has been changed..... so maybe the changes in the body and lens barrel design may help against the problem you speak of?

either way, i've decided to go with the GRD4 white edition and have preordered it from B&H (yay for B&H and international shipping!). i'm preparing to sell my Canon Digital Rebel XT and lenses on eBay to pay for the new camera......
