I love my Ricoh GR-1. There was a recent thread on PNet regarding the film-like "grain" in images shot with the GR-D at high ISO (800. 1600), with some excellent examples in Kei Nakamatsu's flickr gallery.

The camera seems pretty impressive, with minimal shutter lag. Nice pocketable size. Probably would make a good tool for candid and street photography. And a reasonable alternative or complement to the digital RF option(s). The lens is plenty sharp, like the GR-1, and the photos I have seen look natural and forgive my lack of a better term, "film-like." It has seen use by some pros, including Moriyama (as noted in the thread) and Bob Krist, to name a few.

Prices have come down a bit, but still a little high for a digicam. But definitely something I will keep an eye on. Tony Rose, next time you have another demo, pls let me know. 😉

I like everything I've read about the GR-1 and variants, and now the gr digital, price seems high to me though. Maybe when they hit the used market.

I agree with you. That'd be a lucky break. It is a niche camera, and only available in the US through Adorama and Popflash. I would imagine there are not a whole lot of them around.

My GR1s is digital....with a high quality scanner.... and therefore so's my HiMatic 7sII etc etc 😉

I'll admit I'm tempted by a GR digital - very convienient, and quieter by far than the GR1 etc but can't justify it at the mo'.🙁 and the GR1s is also the reason I can't buy a cv 28/3.5.

All in all its a GAS blockage really😀

I thought about this camera long and hard... and then bought a Fuji Natura instead. Nothing against the GRD at all, but I wanted a lens wider than 28mm equivalent. The dollars involved were a major factor as well considering I already have one digital camera.

The only issue with the GRD is that it takes ages to write a raw file, that for me was a deal breaker and eventually I bought the Panasonic LX1.

according to the dpreview and others, it is really a 34mm wa lens + zoom unless you are shooting in the 16:9 aspect ratio, so do you normally shoot 16:9, the native sensor size most of the time?

I have an FZ3 which has 16:9 mode, with 35-420 equivalent 35mm focal length, do you know if my equivalent 35mm is in the standard mode, or in the hd 16:9 mode?

I don't care if it crops pixels off the sensor, it's already very low compared to newer digicams, it's rated at 3megapixels.

Yes I always shoot at 16:9, I think there is no point of shooting an anything else since the image is just going to be cropped, I'd rather capture as much as possible, and deal with cropping later.

As far as I know the LX1 sensor is the first sensor with an actual 16:9 aspect ratio. I think the FZ3 has a standard sensor and the focal lenght is quoted in relation to the standard proportions of the sensor.

16:9 with 8 MPixel is nice since you can choose to crop to either a standard format or an X-Pan format, and still have about 6MPixel in the cropped image in both cases.

i think you are right, I just checked my fz3, and it even shows the cropping at top and bottom. the lx-1 is very special in having that sensor size.

wow, it certainly looks like a very nice camera in build and capable too.

anyone know how the ricoh r4 compares? i had an earlier ricoh G3 camera which didn't quite perform to my expectations.

now i use a canon a610 which is great... what i find lacking is a wide angle perspective and some sort of stabilisation or higher iso...
