I wonder who the portraitist was. I’ve always liked this photograph. it is claimed his respiratory handicap was the driving element behind developing the Leica. Maybe. I reckon he’d have done it with good lungs and one tough hike. He was in just the right place, already with a lot of the necessary technical knowledge and mechanical engineering manufacturing skills available. The most extraordinary thing is his serial documentation of the development of the 35mm camera from its earliest conception. Hard to think of another transformative engineered product with a similar provenance.

I'd have to say that of all the cameras I've been through over the last 47 years, I'd say only the Barnack Leica has really stuck.

If I had only one camera, it would be one of my Barnacks. I could even be happy with my 1930 Leica I since I zone focus and "Sunny 16" exposures.
