Robert Capa's lens hood

Actually, during a PBS documentary on Capa, I saw a picture of him using a Contax II w/5cm/2 collapsible Sonnar & the hood was the 42mm slip-on. That aside, I don't think I've ever seen a 39mm screw-in hood that looked like yours, which looks more like a clip-on (e.g., Leitz 12585) or bayonet (e.g., the Cosina Voigtlander hood that Rich815 has on his 40/1.4). The screw-in hoods usually look like the old Walz/Hoya/Kenko vented hoods w/straight sides (which I don't find any more or less attractive than the "tulip" style).

I found and bought a different kind of aftermarket vented shade on the 'Bay - I'm not fond of my 40 Cron's rubber hood: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=7603634253 First aftermarket tulip hood I've seen.

Anybody seen one of these before?

Exactly, if I had his camera and lens and his lens hood and his strap and even his socks I would be just as good as Robert Capa. Yes.

No, I don't think so.

he left behind some nicely tailored suits too. to go with his Nikon S.
he impressed Ingrid Bergmann it seems, and many other women.

I've had a friend once who said that all I needed in life was a leica in one hand and a beautiful girl (her) in the other. The leica is still with me, she is gone, I do miss her, but at least I still have my leica.

Love me Love my Leica....

"Erudite"? How elitist of you! 😱 Adjectives do not become us, much less the tie-in of reading with photography 😉 (I'm kidding, by the way. I'm clarifying because I don't want others to misinterpret my being in-line with yer humour) 😱 How about "down-to-photo"?

Do you think lens hoods are of concern when bullets are flying about in the battle field? Methinks not.

No, but you want your gear in order and peforming well so you weren't ducking bullets for no reason. If flare ruins the picture, you don't get a second chance.

Very true; but once can discern from many of his photos that "neatness" was the least of his concerns, and getting the shot no matter what was above all. I don't know if he mostly used coated lenses, but if he did, that would have helped a lot. I've never used a shade on any of my rangefinder lenses, except a few times on my 'cron, and can't avoid the collapsible hood in the 50 Summilux pre-asph. The Carl-Zeiss 50mm f/2 works very well without it. My 135mm CZJ, however, doesn't.

Besides, a big shiny hood, wouldn't that be a little attracting? I don't know, I'm not a photojournalist (in the "news" context, at least) so I know nothing about the photojournogearbiz.
