If I order an M8 before 1/31 for the rebate from Robert White (I live in Massachusetts, USA) from RobertWhite, what exchange rate do I get for my USD?

I would assume you'd get whatever the market rate for the currency is, on the day your payment is processed.

"on the day your payment is processed" is right. It's the bank that will decide which exchange rate favors them the best, and when that will happen.

i have been considering a 24mm elmar, and have noticed that since i started considering it (3-4 days ago), the pound has gained about 7-10 cents on the dollar (and keeps going). order soon if you want to as i assume the trend will continue!

As of right now the GBP is 0.706 to the US dollar, but it changes daily. Any internet currency converter should be able to keep you update on fluctuations.

GBP, like AUD, NZD would track the stock markets as stock markets are lead indicators of the economy and attractiveness of the equities would attract investors who will bring dollars into the markets like London, Canberra, etc. In the process, they will sell USD and buy GBP, AUD etc and bring up demand on those currencies, hence GBP gains against USD. USD is still viewed as the safe haven currency in a financial crisis like this, despite being the most over-leveraged currency in the world.
Put simply, if the stock markets in London has a technical rebound, no more bad news of banks closing till 31 Jan 09, you will be seeing a short term rebound of the GBP. In the medium term, there is still a lot of downside to the GBP. But for the purpose of purchasing the Leica, you are running out of time.
That is why I took action between 19-23 Jan 09 when GBP hit historical lows against the USD.

actually just pulled the trigger on a 24mm elmar. for some odd reason my bank gave me a better exchange than the mid-market rate?! the total cost w/ shipping for the new 24mm was $1640. quite a deal i think!

I ordered my M8 yesterday and for some reason I had a problem with AMEX and the price was $3039.64. After going round and round with them Robert White tried to submit payment for me again and it was $3008.87. AMEX still was giving me the runaround so I put it on my Visa and it cost $3050.43, so you can see that there has been significant fluctuation recently. I don't think we can predict where it will go on a given day but it was still $945 cheaper then buying us (and that's not factoring in US retailers shipping charges).

I pulled the trigger yesterday on a black M8 (after selling my R2A to enochRoot).
I figured I can track the GBP as much as I want, but it'll only come down to a few dollars difference, and it's not worth losing a spot in the February shipment. As long as I get my rebate, all is good!

I was a bit surprised that even know they do an instant 650 pound rebate that it is exclusive of VAT since it's only a UK promotion so it equates to something like $560 rebate. Topaz- I think I scooped you on their last in stock black M8! Stu told me they have been busier than hell in there this week

Yea, Ken told me I would get the rebate but I would have to wait until early February. But hey, the wait is half the fun! (a load of BS, but I tell myself that so I don't go crazy 😉)

OK this worries me now. It used to be UK citizens would buy from the US to save money, now its the other way round!

Not only that, Canadians are flocking to my hometown (Buffalo NY, upstate) to order international goods, because the CD -> USD -> GBP conversion is highly favorable!
