Rockwell goes Rangefinder!

Some people print their photos. Sometimes they like to print big. Sometimes the camera didn't do such a good job of white balance and this can be easily fixed in RAW.
Shooting snaps of kids blowing out birthday candles in RAW would be a waste of time. Shooting landscapes that are going to be printed for gallery viewing in RAW is just a good idea.

Why is it 'just' a good idea? Sharper? More detail? Please. If people spent as much time processing their jpegs as they did their raw shots they'd wonder what the difference was.

Yes, you can process jpegs after the fact. You can even correct the white balance...

Come on, it is just too easy to critizise that guy. Obvioulsy, he's got a passion, photography for which he devotes a lot of time for himself and to share his enthusiasm. He might be off on some subjects (or even many!), but I find it great to have the time and patience to maintain his site (because I am sure he is not making a lot of money with it) and share experiences. I would like to see what some of the sarcastic posters have to propose as an alternative. Anyway, his theory of the 7 levels of photographers made me laugh (I took it for what it claims it is, a humoristic note, nothing more) and recognized in his profiles a lot of people.:D

Some say that Ken Rockwell can photograph with his eyes closed and yet still capture "contest winning" images, others insist that Rockwell's vision can bypass the world of phenomenon and see the-thing-in-itself... And recently there have been rumors that reality bends itself to his will and turn into images which automatically appear in his camera.

Ken Rockwell, the seventh level photographer, a living legend and a superior man.

I use Adobe Lightroom so processing RAW takes the same amount of time as processing JPEG.

Yes, you can tweak the white balance in JPEG but not to the same extent. That said, I rarely actually screw up WB so this isn't a big deal to me. The real bonus with RAW is the slightly improved dynamic range. If you're doing digital black and white then every bit helps.

Disregard my previous post. He is an idiot. Here is what I read on his advice to save money to buy cameras:

"Go Dutch"
This isn't the way to win favor among women, but it is a way to save money.
I've never paid for my girlfriends, but this was more out of bad upbringing than cheapness. I never knew better.
My wife has explained this to me today as something I'll need to know if she ever croaks, although of course we still both pay our own ways. ":bang::bang::bang:

I would prefer to have a $35 FED than "Go Dutch" with a girlfriend.
The whole article "How to afford" is pathetic.

It is fairly obvious that the advice about "Going Dutch" for saving money is self-irony. Rockwell knows that he was a nerd that rather saved his money for cameras than paid for his girlfriends. The "we still both pay our own ways" part is of course just additional double-irony or doublethink. Very Orwellian... Many people just don't understand or appreciate Rockwell's multi-layer irony.

Well, "il n'y a pas de fumée sans feu" as we say ... there is no smoke without fire.
As for your multi-layer irony comment, you must be right, I did not get it, this guy must be from the UK :D
I 'd better start some threads in French.
