Rodinal Stand Developing Tutorial

I didn't see, as I scanned your tutorials, where you covered the reason for stand/semi stand development. It is tempting to use stand or in this case semi stand to simplify the world. I do something similar with just minimal agitation. Mostly I do it because where I live and where I vacation it is scenes that will require highlight suppression (compensation). But luckily as someone above said you can rescue almost any negative with proper scanning and levels. I do that almost every day.

The reasons are spread throughout the tutorial, but the short version is:
- good for scanning
- good highlight AND shadow detail
- economical (uses much less developer than usual)
- idiot proof (it's REALLY hard to screw up and isn't much affected by too much/little soup time and temperature
- I'm lazy... I can just drop the film in and go watch TV
- you can soup different brands/ISO's at the same time

Where can one order Rodinal in the USA? I see that Freestyle has "Foma Fomadon R09 Film Developer - 250ml (Similar to Agfa Rodinal)". Is this the best choice for ordering in the USA?

So one roll 135-36 of Tri-X, E. I. 400ISO, in a 500 ml tank to be developed at around 23 ℃ in Rodinal is ... how many ml of R09?

I have consecutively ruined 4 rolls of Tri-X now using stand development. What is the trick behind ?

Try my version Gabor (semi stand): expose at 250 ASA (effective TriX speed), 30', one gently agitation every 3 minutes, 3ml Rodinal per roll, 20 degrees Celcius (I cool the water down with ice cubes). For exposure @ 400 ASA, try 4-5ml.

Good luck,

Roland.

well you need a minimum of 3.5ml per roll, so to make it easy, 400ml water + 4ml Rodinal... I usually do two rolls at a time, 700ml water + 7ml rodinal. As far as what the "trick" is well, I described my workflow as best I can in the tutorial, I don't know if there's any trick... how are your rolls being ruined? Overdeveloped, underdeveloped, spots, uneven development?

Cool. For myself, I use Rodinol for 100 speed film, and HC110 for 400 speed, just to get smaller grain with the faster film.

@Frank - Are you using HC110 stand or normal development? I used HC110 dilution h with normal development and got larger grain than Rodinal stand development 1:100 when using Arista Premium 400 (Tri-X).

Roland, thanks for the tip ! I will try semi-stand next then !

My problems with stand so far were a) huge grain b) high contrast or very steep gradiation curve. It looked worse than normal (agitation) development with Rodinal in 1:50.

I already had used water temperatures of down to 18 degrees (keeping all temperatures of following process steps at the same level) and also tried 3ml / 497ml with 30 seconds initial tank inversions and following rest only. That film came out best but still not as good as the examples I have seen here or elsewhere.

I just developed a roll of Ilford HP-5 Plus in Rodinal 1:100 and it turned out, although I will admit its not the best film for this developer. The Tri-X looks a lot better than the Ilford. (sharper)

I have several rolls of TMax 100 and 3200. Would another developer work better for these films or is Rodinal good?

You are probably right, I have had some great results from semi-stand 1+100 for one hour, 30 seconds initial agitation, 2-3 inversions at 20 and 40 minutes, but......................................why not just find a good time for 1+100 and use it. Here are two the first is a high contrast scene using semi-stand development:

and the second also high contrast using just normal development:

Good question, does anyone know what is the current incarnation of Rodinal is called?

I'm still using the vintage pukka version last made by Agfa, which I think of as "echt" Rodinal. Works fine, and I anticipate will continue to be fine so long as there is film for it. By the time I have to reorder, my current film choices will probably all be discontinued, so I'll need to find yet other film/developer combos from what remains. I tried Roland's version of semi-stand with Neopan 400 (rated however at box speed) and it worked a treat. I've set aside my powdered developers completely. Hope the unopened bag life of unmixed D76 and Xtol matches the shelf-life of Rodinal -- I'm not counting on it, but luckily my inventory is limited to one bag of each. Not saying how big my Rodinal stash is -- at first I thought I had overreacted when Agfa went belly-up, but now I'm sitting pretty.

I have been using HC110 diluted 1:100 for 20min with HP5+ but the negs were a bit dense and flat. Right now I've got 5 rolls drying that I souped in HC110 at 1:60 (H) for 10min. I'll let you know in about 1/2 hour about the grain.
