When they did a review of the Zeiss Ikon for Shutterbug last year, Roger Hicks & Frances Schultz did an interesting comparison of frame lines from various viewfinders. They found that the 35 mm frame lines from the ZI show a little more (6% more) than those from the MP, which I believe has the same frame lines as the M8. Correct? So, if I'm not having any problems with the 35 frame lines on the ZI, I would expect that it would be just fine on the M8 - if not better.

I believe that Popular Photography measured the Rollei 40/2.8 at close to 42 mm (41.68 mm) when they tested it. So, this would make it a longish 50 on the M8 - about 55 mm.

With all due respect to the wonderful Rollei 40, there is a CLE Rokkor 40 in the classifieds now for $225. You will not find a better bargain in 40mm lenses than this one in a very long time.

I'd guess the coatings would be better than on the Summicron- more than a few years difference there- but is seems quite similar in size. I find the 40 'cron to be a little hard to use due to the small size- my fingers are not terrible clunky, but these lenses are really tiny. (I came to RF from Nikon Ais lenses- bulky buggers in comparison)
Another plus would be the filter threads/hood which are a bit of an inconvience with the 'cron (if you are a big filter user). I haven't had the filter fall off, but it does just kinda hang there, and my 'crons hood is really mishapen and cracked- I don't use it anymore having replaced it with the clamp on Rollei version.

Hey- if you go with the Rollei & don't like it I might be willing to swap the 'cron for it- assuming we could work out a deal. (read choose the black one)
 
yes, a very good deal in the classifieds here under lenses.

i eventually went for the 40 rokkor that was on sale here.
i have a great tiny hood in 40.5 that will replace the rubber one. i had the rokkor in a former life and went with the known.
i think it's gonna rock the zi.
 
I got a 40/2 summi off evil bay and it is JACKED. I'm about to have to file a complaint with the seller. Shame really it is a very pretty lens. The Sonnar does sound interesting. That has to be the cheapest sonnar design lens that is new out there is it not?
 
Has anyone seen the structure of this lens? I know it's 5 elements in 4 groups. Is it the same design as Sonnar 40/2.8 lens on Rollei 35S, 35SE or 35 Classic?

I found this page at http://www.rollei.jp/e/pd/35RF.html and there is a picture of the lens structure. Unfortunately I'm not sure, is the picture from Rollei 35S or Rollei 35 RF HFT Sonnar 40/2.8 lens...

to my knowledge the lens structure of the Rollei 35RF Sonnar follows the lens which was designed by Zeiss for the Rollei 35S/ SE (and what has been told, was immediately redesigned 1972 after the first prototypes who weren't sharp enough and refused by Rollei).
The lens is pretty much the same as sold from 1974 on except for improved coating, has the typical flare of these 4-element 1960's and 1970's Sonnars, even with its big shade. Contrast is on the soft side wide open, but stopped-down a very sharp lens. Underpriced both in terms of quality and rarity.
The lens is made of chromed brass and very heavy for its small size. Poor man's Summicron 4th gen.! Like it! ;-)

The diagram which you posted, is actually the same as of the Rollei 35S Sonnar lens. I just checked it from the Claus Prochnow's book "Rollei 35 Family" from 1994 on page 47 and 121. The book is an excerpt from the "Rollei Reports 2 and 3".

May I ask, where did you find this diagram?

I took a closer look at page http://www.rollei.jp/e/pd/35RF.html diagram under the Rollei 35S photo. I can't still be 100% sure, that the diagram is referring on that page the new Sonnar 40mm F2.8 HFT LTM-lens. It might as well be the original Rollei 35S lens diagram... 🙂
