Just developed a couiple of test rolls of Rollei 80S - one in Xtol 1+2 (iso 64) for 11 minutes and one in Rodinal 1+50 (iso 64) for 10 minutes. BOth at 20C with two inversions each minute.

First impressions

+lots of resolution, low grain and sharp off the scanner.
- quite contrasty

Has anyone else use this film and how do you develop for scanning (Nikon 9000)

Cheers

Mike

Pics or it didn't happen.

In Rodinal - full frame and 100% crop of 4,000dpi scan. No sharpening, scanned as positive, gamma = 1 and then inverted in ACR with white and black points set. Mamiya 7 and 150 lens on tripod.

In Xtol 1+2. Again no sharpening of 100% crop of 4,000 dpi scan from Nikon 9000 - same scan routine.

Not so keen on the whit speckles on the scan either, but any ideas on contolling highlights (yes I'll try less development next...)

Cheers

How do you scan?

The software on my Nikon Coolscan V has the nasty tendency to blow out highlights for B/W scans. If I scan the same neg with Vuescan, I can squeeze much more detail from the highlights.

I struggled with this for quite a while until I figured out it wasn't a problem with my development (well, mostly not 😉)

These are scanned as positive using Nikon Scan - the raw histogram has space at both ends.. Perhaps I should download vuescan and silverfast trials. I'll also try reducing development by 30% and see how it looks.

I deliberately chose contrasty scenes.

Regarding contrat, I find the published times for all current Rollei films I tried in rodinal to be much too long. divide the published time by two as a start.

I too have the wite specks, but much less with the 80S and much more with the 400S. I find that the dust filter in Photoshop elminates them effectively without altering the rest of the image if you give the right parameters (trial and error).
