I know it's been discussed before, but a reminder that Tuesday, 21 April, at 10AM local time, the Rollei factory's parts and tools goes on auction-

An interesting mind game I learned long ago was: How far back in time could you go with a piece of technology and have it be understood? I think most of a non-metered Rolleiflex body could be understood by a watch maker from 3-400 years earlier? I don't know about he optics, but the camera obscura was known. And the timing escapement of a shutter, although the desire or need for making it go so fast might be confusing.

So when people talk about the 'end of an era,' I think they are saying a lot in this case.

I have this nightmare that someone is going to buy hundreds of bodies and focus hoods and lens panels and such. Then convert them to pen holders. Or maybe a coffee grinder using the side crank...

A few months ago I tried to buy a collection of tools and parts for Rolleflex repairs. Including a collimator. But my bid came in below the reserve. Something tells me that I could have bought aticket to Germany and bought as much or more for the same amount. I do hope that the parts end up in good homes that will keep them available and in use.

Are you going, Hans?
Cheers
Brett
Sadly not Brett, would have loved to but couldn't get free days from work.

There is one item over there that is very nostalgic. A set of vintage measurement tools believed to have been from one of the company starters. My guess is from Herr Heidecke.

I know that many people from professional camera repair services went to the auction. Hope they manage to buy the spareparts before everything goes into a dumpster !

btw All pictures are removed from that website now. Good thing I managed to download some of them over the last couple of weeks.

Dan, I had a Rollei collimator but sold it. You are much better of with a general purpose collimator from e.g. Gokosha. I bought that Rollei collimator from a retired professional camera service man and he didn't use it either.
