An interesting mind game I learned long ago was: How far back in time could you go with a piece of technology and have it be understood? I think most of a non-metered Rolleiflex body could be understood by a watch maker from 3-400 years earlier? I don't know about he optics, but the camera obscura was known. And the timing escapement of a shutter, although the desire or need for making it go so fast might be confusing.
So when people talk about the 'end of an era,' I think they are saying a lot in this case.
