I just came back from a 10 day trip to Italy. I saw thousands of people with cameras. However, I only saw 4 rangefinders: a Contax G, and Epson RDS, a Leica M8, and a Bessa-L (yes, I know it's not really a rangefinder, etc). All of the owners were male and likely under 40. I spoke with the owner of the Bessa-L, a brilliant chap from Holland, and both of us were happy to show the each others' cameras to the respective wife, (I had my Bessa R), in order to prove we weren't crazy for wanting a film rangefinder.
APS-C digital SLRs were everywhere. I only saw a handful of film SLR, but also only a handful of the monster-sized full frame digital SLRs.
I think rangefinders be much more popular with some marketing. Since most people on vacation, in a big city, tend towards wide angles, rangefinders have serious advantages. An rf with a wide angle is much smaller and lighter than a comparable SLR. I brought 3 lenses with me, a 21mm, a 50mm and a 135mm. I did about 70% of my shooting with the 21mm (and probably 25% with the 50mm). I only used the telephoto to take photos of the pope. Otherwise, I wouldn't have needed one. I never wanted to take a macro photo. I don't see technical advantages for a SLR. Who needs a zoom on super wide angle? I never had my 21mm and wished I had a 25mm instead. I'm certain someone with a 25mm would say the opposite. Step forward or step back!

I saw quite a few rangefinders while I was in Rome.
Leica M8, M6, a few canonet GL17s, and one or two FSUs.
I was only there for two days. hahaha.

Nine rolls are getting developed now, so I'll post them tonight and send a link. I took 17 rolls over 10 days (15 of which were 36 exposure). I only brought 14, so I had to buy extra. Most places just had consumer film, but I found one shop in Florence which had Portra. It also had a huge photo of a Barnack on the outside and a used M6 for sale (1650 euro, body only).
I have to mail my Kodachrome off as well. Hopefully, the exposure will come out well.
