After reasonably heavy use (serial is 10xx) the glue on pieces of the rubber grip is losing its adhesion. I can easily peel off the portion near the SD card slot. The part under the R-D1 logo is starting to do the same. I'd like to stick it back on more securely. Any suggestions / experiences?

Hi Ed,

It's common but I'm not sure what glue people have been using.

Cheers,

Sean

Actually, I meant to say contact glue. That the stuff woodworkers use to glue down veeners, formica, etc.

Contact glue .. i had to glue about every piece of rubber on my camera.
Just be carefull with the rubber near the card slot .......... open and close the card slot while the glue dries .. just to make sure it opens well after the gluing .. if a small drop squeezes into the mechanism of the card-slot door it wil not open again ... this almost happened to me.

Another option

I can hardly wait till the covering starts to come off my R-D1. Think of all the custom covering options that will be open to us that were previously available only to the FSU and IIIf crowd. I can see my precious Ms R-D1 now, in a shocking pink lizard skin ensemble!

Contact cement is a fine idea, and I have some. Trouble is, I will have first to remove the old adhesive, probably. It is quite sticky, but dosn't hold any more. Any idea which solvent to use: alcohol, acetone, ethyl ether, "goo gone", light fluid, etc., etc.?

If you contact Jon Goodman, he has some excellent doulble sided sticky stuff that is ideal for camera coverings. My Pentax camera repair guy recommends a contact adhesive called Evostick in the UK which he thins down first with solvent.

As to the old glue, I start with Rosonol, then de-natured alcohol and then white spirit and use whichever one works first. ;)

I had the same problem with my Bessa R2-the back thumb grip started to peel and as I had read on another forum of someone loosing theirs I removed it.The glue holding it came off easily by rubbing back and forth with my thumb.I too used evostic contact adhesive and it has stayed in place since. This is one of the reasons I purchased one of Luigis half cases for my R-D1

I did remove the rubber piece and old adhesive, and re-attach it with new adhesive, but the procedure was more difficult than anticipated.

First off, it was difficult to scrape off the thick layer of the old material, once I had easily detached the rubber piece. Isopropyl alcohol, lacquer thinner, etc. woul not budge it. Finally, multiple applications of citrus-based Goo Gone plus scraping with a knife did the trick. Evostik is not available in the States, so I tried DAP Wedgewood contact cement, which would not stick to the rubber. Two of my old standbys: Household GOOP and double-sided carpet tape (you peel off both sides and are left with a sticky sheet) did adhere adequately, but within a hour each had become unstuck either to the rubber or to the metal base. Finally, Scotch heavy duty mounting tape has held for 24 hours.

Hope this helps other DIY'ers.
