Tomasy and others have suggested using a section of inner tube rubber in conjuction with a socket wrench to remove eyepiece rings and other easily marred circular items.

Unfortunately, tubeless tires have eliminated the use of the rubber inner tube from most vehicles.

However, bike shops usually have an abundance of these items, free for the asking (used), and most department and sporting goods stores offer new bicycle inner tubes at very reasonable prices.

One tube will make 100 tools. 🙂

Crutch tips come in various sizes (canes also) and are inexpensive. I use them for removing lens rings and flanges all the time. Most pharmacies sell them, along with other rubber sheeting and rubber goods.

Well, you know Rick, if you need thin and durable rubber material, the local 7/11 should have it. Not for bicycles though 🙂

Heavy duty rubber gloves also work...the good ones have a canvas-like backing...

I have several pieces of rubber underlay for carpets. Looks like a net - full of holes - but it works a treat!

I'm guessing bike inntertubes would make a better tool. It is thinner, though not as thin as those mentioned from the local 7/11.
