S3 2000 a good starter RF?

I wonder how many people here would purchase an F-S adapter if they were made available again at a reasonable cost?
We should take a survey here, (and at any other relevant sites) and then ask Mr. Gandy r...e...a...l nice if he would speak to the folks at Cosina about making up some more. I'd buy one in a heartbeat. Then I could mount my F-mount 19, 24, 35, 50, 85, and 105 AI & AIS lenses on my S3.

Ha, ha, ha, ha....that is cool!!! :D :D :D

I might just do the juggle and get a F to S and a F to LTM adapter and trade my LTM 15/4.5 for an F mount one (pluss some money). I could use that lens everywhere I care about (read Nikon F mounts, Leica M mounts and Nikon S mount cameras).

I did not know Stephen was out of 25mm in SC mount. Too bad, this is a great lens. I went with the Russian 35/2.8 just because of price and I do not use that focal length too often at that speed.

I got a great user 105 for around $250-300 if I remember right. I've seen Nikkor 35mms come up on evilBay in a reasonable rate. Only real problem is if you want speed, your only option is the 1.8. Great lens, expensive and hard to find without taking out a home equity line of credit.

Stephen Gandy still lists all the SC-mount lenses in stock. It's the UK dealer who is starting to run short of stock.

Vince

RW are the UK distributors, if they are out the lenses will be leaking across the big pond...

>>I did not realize there had been a Nikon S to Leica adapter that has sold out. Did CV make one?<<

Leica can't mount on Nikon, but Nikon can mount on Leica (flange to film distance). Nikon to LTM adapters from the 1950s are worth something like $2,000 (because Leica owners want to use those Nikkors?) Gandy carried some modern adapters for awhile, but these quickly sold out. Don't know if they were CV or some other brand. Certainly there's a market for a machinist who wants to gin up a few dozen of these -- could probably sell them for a few hundreds dollars profit apiece. It would, for example, allow you to shoot Nikkor-S-mount lenses on an RD-1.

Charlie,

They seem to not be drying up at www.cameraquest.com. I do wish they would come out with special lenses (say like the 35/1.2 or a fast telephoto (85/2 might be nice), but that will never happen for the masses.

I'm with you Bill. Bought a Voigtlander 35/2.5 for my S3 2000 from Cameraquest a while back and it is a sweet lens. As long as we're wishing for things that will not be, let's wish for Nikon to release the 35 that comes with the new SP.

The S3-2000 was built in 2000-'01. It is no longer in production. (The same techs who built it went on to build the SP-2005).

A recent posting on the Nikon Historical Site says the camera serial numbers run in two batches with a gap in the mid-20XXXX range. Therefore, some of the final bodies are in the 21XXXX range.
Thanks Vince, I recently got mine from a Japan seller, the body is 213xxx and the lens is 208xxx, comes with Japanese papers. As long as there's no internal/cosmetic differences between early and late S3 2000s, these number mean nothing to me really.

>>Is that the new modern camera or a vintage model.... or can a person tell?<<

The lens is a bit different from the original (except for a few super-rare "Olympic" lenses).

The shutter speed numbers are in funky Day-Glo colors on the new camera. Apparently, a few of the last original S3s had Day-Glo red and green, too. But my 1958 S3 has more earthtones on its shutter-speed dial, as both of my Fs and my F2.

I don't like Nikon S3's S4's

I don't like Nikon S3's S4's

I have a lot of Nikon RF. I don't have any S3's or S4's because I really don't like their often flarry RF/VF.

while the S2000's had a great 50/1.4 lens, the bad news is that the body is still a S3. ugh. I find the SP's RF/VF about a 100 times better and more useful. The Bessa R2S isn't nearly as well made as the Nikon RF's, but they do have absolutely the best RF/VF of any Nikon RF mount camera -- by a VERY wide margin. On top of that, they have TTL metering.

the SP2005's cost a lot more than the S3 2000, but are a hell of a lot nicer, and in my view much better long term investments.

I love S4

I love S4

Don't you come in here and bad mouth my Nikons:D
The SP is the best one for sure but lots have faded rangefinder patches...some are so bad they're useless(I have one).
The rangefinder patch may have more flare in the S3 but at least they don't fade as much.
The idea of having two finder next to each other was swell but the wide angle finder has no focus patch. keep focusing with one finder and compose with the other(tell them Jenni).
Talking about busy VF, try looking tru the SP's viewfinder dialed in @ 10.5, frame-line galore.

Who's buying cameras for investments? The Limited SP is selling for half of what the initial price was!
