It's a bit strange how people on this forum obsess over CLA-ing perfectly functional Nikon cameras.
Is the original lube whale-based or dolphin-based? What do you suppose they use on the S3-2000 and SP-2005? Maybe that's why my new camera doesn't feel quite as smooth and precise as the older well-used cameras.
It seems to me that a modern CLA might replace the sea-creature oil with something more politically correct that won't last as long.
I've been shooting Nikon camera for 25 years. I never even heard the term CLA until I started visiting this forum.

Well I'm new to the Nikon rangefinder fold, with my black s3-2000. Yes, I plan to shoot with it, as soon as I get a day or two off.
But if Nikon hadn't made these cameras new I would have never bought a Nikon rangefinder. I just don't know enough about them to consider buying a 50 year old camera and trusting that it would work when I wanted it to.
At least now I have a new camera and don't have to worry about repairs or gears gumming up. I plan to have a one lens Nikon system and enjoy everytime I take it out shooting.
Although I work as a sports photographer, that entire industry is digital. I can use the rangefinder to make the photos I want with out worrying if someone else is going to like/buy them. I'm looking forward to having fun with it.

Fortunately, there are still some folks out there who can adequately repair old Leica and Nikon rangefinders so they work like new. I just had both of my Nikon S2 bodies CLA'd with new shutter surtains installed.

The biggest problem with really old Nikon bodies is the flash syncs. Half-century-old electrical contacts just don't stay reliable. When I shoot flash with the S3-2000, behold! It fires every time.

My biases are showing through. Although just about everything I shot indoors from 1976 to 1984 had light from a Vivitar 283 bounced off the ceiling, I just never use flash any more. If I can't catch the moment with a 50/1.4 and available light, well, I just let it go.

Don't be afraid to scan and submit some of the Nikon RF sports photos. A 105mm lens on a Nikon S3-2000 is great at close-in action. ... the RF patch is a large enough part of the overall image that it's not difficult at all to follow-focus.
