Apologies if I missed a thread on this before now: Has anybody seen Wim Wenders's documentary about photographer Sebastio Salgado? It is called "Salt of the Earth." I hope it will be playing in Northern California. Or has it?

Bob, I just saw it 2 nights ago. It's very good as a biography of Salgado, explains some of his motivations and shows him on some of his long excursions. Large parts are very gruesome, with pictures of starving, dispossessed people and bloated corpses, but ends on a high note with the Genesis project, full of reaffirmation. Slightly hagiographic, almost like a vanity published book, because it's co-directed and/or co-produced by his son.
I don't think it's a Must See, but it's a good movie. Of course his photographs are very beautiful.

Hi, Bob,

Glad to see you back! Sounds like you had a terrific trip. Now I am interested in cricket!!! And I know absolutely nothing about it. 🙂)

Thank you for the Salgado heads up as I would quite like to see it. Any ideas how someone can actually view it without leaving home?

I saw the film today. It's playing at a few theaters in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, i missed the opportunity to see it at the fantastic Arclight theater here, so a small AMC screen in Burbank had to suffice.

I DO think it's a 'must see.' I have been incredibly impressed by the man's work for the past 15 years or so. Seeing the images projected onto a theater screen was fantastic. While i had seen many of the photographs, there were many more shown in the film that were related to the more famous images, or continuations of the various stories. As well, while i was already quite respectful of Salgado himself, i have to say that he came across as truly one of the most incredible and fascinating people to ever live.... Was that too much? Nah. Really moving stuff. Not for the faint of heart, but i believe it's something we need to see.

Don't wait for it to be available on Netflix to stream on your MacBook. See it in its glory.

am seeing it tomorrow in Toronto. most friends who have seen it give it glowing reviews, one thought it wasn't as good as he thought it could be. all are photojournalists/ documentary photographers.
