Salgado: Genesis

Can't wait to see this, will be a while before I get to London this year, but will definitely catch it before it finishes. Thanks for the heads up!

When he spoke in San Francisco a few years back I saw some of his "work-in-progress". Simply superb, should be a great show.

Thank you for posting this. I'm going to be in London in August, and now I'm definitely going to check this show out. I've never seen any of his prints in person. The preview images available on the site are simply stunning. Does anyone know what he's shooting with these days? Yes, yes, I know, it's the photographer, not the camera. I'm just curious. The dynamic range he's able to pull out of his photos is unbelievable. They have a bit of an HDR feel, but are not ugly in slightest. In fact, they somehow have both a high dynamic range and quite a bit of contrast. It seems like a paradox.

Here is a page with a list of links covering the development of this project over several years.

At various times, on various projects, Salgado seems to have used everything from 35mm Leicas to digital Hasselblads and Nikons, via medium-format rollfilm and Pentax. The printing, for Workers at least, was done via imageset internegative and may have involved selective bleaching of the final silver-based prints -- very, very complex and highly skilled in other words. These tasks are out sourced to labs in Paris where there is extremely well practised and close liaison between Salgado, the film-technicians and the printer. You might simply say the best workflow possible, anywhere.

The prints are wonderful - don't miss the show when it comes within range of you. I will be travelling to London specially to see it.

Edit:

Thank you for this. I suppose when you're one of the best, you have access to the best.

I find his published pictures leave me nonplussed. They seem overdone and lacking in any kind of subtlety to me. Technically excellent, of course.

I`m pleased that you said that 🙂.
That is exactly how they strike me.

They look almost verging on HDR ... but , I hasten to add ,its only an impression and not an informed opinion.
Still its one book that I `ll not be getting , thankfully.

I have mixed feelings about hat I have seen to date, which is a limited amount, to say the least.
I would agree that all the images that I have seen are technically excellent.
Content, however, is somewhat of a mixed bag. Some of Salgado's images are jaw dropping, others are somewhat mundane.
He might end up being something akin to a slow burner, if I can see more of his work. Apathy is what I feel at the moment.

Seen the prints, read the book. He is a master photographer no doubt about it! It will be celebrated worldwide; but I saw the work after seeing some McCullin and Smith prints, which had a depth and integrity that was absent from the Salgado work. I am quite a fan of S. Salgado but this latest project, magnificent as it is, lacks his earlier empathy and after the initial amazement at the detail and scale I was left cold.

...a bit too much HDR...

...a bit too much HDR...

Thanks for posting. A bit to much HDR for me especially seen when looking at the peoples skin, but I like the shots of the bush....

The premier showing of the Sebastiao Salgado project, Genesis, is opening in London this week.

Having seen a little of his other projects, I'd suggest that this is a "don't miss" show. More information at the links below.

Hey, thanks!! Not only is his work superb but the man is on a very noble mission and as a photographer, he is making a great difference in the world. 😎

I saw the exhibition last Saturday at the Natural History Museum.

An outstanding body of work with some extraordinarily superb pictures.

Bear in mind this is a natural history of the earth done entirely in black and white - where other photographers would have chosen the more obvious route of colour.

The exhibition is incredibly good value. Give yourself at least 2-3 hours and get there early if you want an uncluttered view, and book or else you will find yourself at the weekend in a queue which stretches back to entrance trying to get into the NHM. (If you have pre-booked with the electronic ticket you get right in).

I saw, twenty years ago, the exhibition "La Main de l'Homme" at the "Palais de Tokyo" in Paris. Behind the quality of the message given by Salgado's pictures, the prints were absolutely astonishings. Probably the best I ever seen
I hope this new exhibition will go to Paris soon.
