salvaging an entire roll of darkslide pics

after having lost a bunch of pics today shooting with the darkslide in, can I at least salvage the roll by re-rolling it onto another 120 spool? I've done the double roll to turn 120 film into 620 film, rolling it twice. I would guess, then, that I could do this in the dark too, just rolling it once (going from end of roll back to beginning). Is there something I'm not thinking of? (Besides taking out the darkslide. I learned that lesson.)

What camera is this for? I was only 2 or 3 pics in when I realized the other day, with the RB67 (not a rangefinder) I was able to just release the takeup spool, push the button on the feed spool and wind it back up by hand. If you've already wound it entirely onto the spool, now out of the camera, I guess you could do the exact same thing all over again and end up with a rewound spool.

I know better but it still bites me. I'm about ready to get "Hey Dummy, Dont forget the Dark Slide" etched on the reticle.

It's still in the back, but it's all the way over onto the takeup spool. I was shooting with a Rapid Omega 200, and when I when I got to the end of the roll, I went to switch backs and noticed the darkslide was already in. (The RO is supposed to have a safety against that, but mine must be busted.)

I don't understand how you wound it back by hand, though. Did you go into a darkroom and do it, or were you out shooting somewhere?

I have re-rolled 120 from the takeup spool back onto the supply-side spool and it worked fine. Just be careful of the free end of the film, as it's not attached to the paper near the now-free end. Tuck that free end under and try your best to roll it all up snugly. I did use the camera to do the (re)winding, once I got the loose film end tucked in and started straight...

I ended up doing this with my Dad's old Welmy 6 because the lightly-printed frame numbers were so faintly seen through the red window, I just kept winding, never sure I'd seen a frame number! By the second time through I knew what I was looking for...

Oh, yeah, I did it in a dark room, but a changing bag would work as well I think.

I used a changing bag, and I had not completely unwound the supply spool when I did this. The RB has a little button to disengage the spools. You have to pick them up out of the insert, but they will spin freely at that point . I've no clue how a rapid omega holds the film, but I imagine that form follows function means that there are some similarities (But not necessarily to the degree of the little disengage buttons).

I did it once under a thick blanket, in the evening🙂 It worked, but indeed the end of the roll, which is the beginning now, is free so have to take care of that.

looks like I successfully respooled and saved that roll. I was careful about that free end, maybe too careful as I ended up unrolling it and doing it over to make sure I didn't have a fold. My fingers started cramping a little, too, but the sucker's respooled and already half-shot. Results to come ...
