In my quest for the ultimate point-and-shoot camera, i came across today the Samsung Ecx-1. I got it for £1.50 but unfortunately i cannot find any info about it on the web.

As you can see, i wouldn't call in "compact" camera. It runs on two Cr123A batteries which i need to buy in order to test it.

Does anyone have the manual? Is there anyone who has been using this camera?
Any info will be highly appreciated

Actually this looks like an interesting camera. The lens is designed and manufactured by Schneider but the LCD panel on the top is quite confusing and that is why i need the manual.
 
I just gave this camera to a neighbor. Big, comfortable to hold but I think slow in operation. Like many Asian products, there's a fascination with buttons. Jeezus man, why do we need so many buttons?

Mine also came with the case. The front of it snapped and came away from the side.

Well built. It reminds me ever so slightly of the Rollei QZ 35 cameras, except the Rollei QZ is a beautiful and functional design.
 
I picked up a mint Ecx1 at Goodwill for $3-4 and i will agree with you, it is confusing. I have the manuel but that's as complicated as the camera. What shots I did take with it came out just great, but it isd rather bulky to tote around. One problem which I encountered was that some of the pics shot in the telephoto zoom weren't sharp. There's something about that in the manual, but I can't really say I understood it. I may have to drag it out again and run some ISO 800 through it and check it out again. BTW, the camera was designed my F. Porsche in Germany.

You bought the ultimate point and shoot, you can buy these on ebay for less than £15. This camera has just about everything you could wish for, if you need the manual send me a private mess. and I will post you the manual but please return it when you have read it. The only downside to this camera is that it is big not exactly a compact more of a bridge camera. These cameras were £300 new, it was Samsungs attempt to make the ultimate compact 35mm camera. What other compact has so many options, multi beam auto focus, interval timer, 2 sec delay timer, exposure compensation, fuzzy logic, fixed focus, fill flash, anti redeye, landscape (infinity focus), double exposure, remote control, double exposure etc etc. not to mention the cracking schnieder 38-140 zoom lens. I have numerous compact 35mm camers this is the one I reach for the most. What a camera for the price of a cheap roll of film , enjoy.

At the tele-end the lens is a f/11 so unless you load some fast film and shoot in plenty of sunshine, expect some blurryness due to slow speed.
 
Not trying to hijack the thread, but has anyone had any experience with any other Samsung point & shoots (Maxima & Evoca series, for example)? I recently purchased a Maxima Zoom 80 GLM (38-80 zoom) as part of a box lot, it seems very well built, and is very compact (about the same size as the Olympus Stylus/mju). Has some nice features (redeye, timer, 2 sec delay, and bulb) with LCD display on top, which I like. The various versions of the Maxima line sell quite cheaply on eBay, and seem like a nice cheap alternative for a pocketable P&S. But I can't find much info on Samsung lenses at all. Or a manual for my example, although its operation is quite intuitive.
 
Regarding Samsung, their Evoca line of P&S's have got positive feedback. They have lenses wearing Schneider-Kreuznach print.
 
btgc, I was wondering if some of the Samsung line were Japanese cameras with German glass, since Samsung owned Rollei for several years in the late 90's, the Rollei Prego that is so highly regarded by many was manufactured by Samsung during this period. My little Maxima is not one with the Schneider lenses, though. But I have discovered that it does use fuzzy logic for zoom focus. I took it out shooting this morning, it has less shutter lag than any of my other zoom point & shoots, if the photos are as good as the way the camera feels, this one may be a keeper.

I did buy a couple of higher-end Maximas, a 1350Ti and a Zoom 70L, they go for a song at auction. If they are decent performers, maybe the Samsung Maxima line are the best price for performance for full-feature p&s out there.
 
An Ecx-1 came up for auction a few days ago, and I could not resist, it just looks so interesting. The mailman brought it to me today, and pictures do not do it justice. What an utterly magnificent beast this is. One thing that will take some getting used to is the placement of the viewfinder, but otherwise, it has wonderful ergonomics, and for such a large camera, I think that it will perform well even shooting one-handed. And I don't think that the operation is overly complicated at all, it is very similar to another Samsung P&S (70L) that I own.
 
I agree with you Greyscale, the pictures don't do justice to it but I do find the ergonomics quite frustrating. I will disable the flash and then i will change the AF mode and the flash will go back to Auto. Or another thing is that the camera will go to stand by after been idle for 3 mins. I didn't have the chance to fully test it though, it is waiting it's turn after i test an olympus mju-1.
It might jump the queue as well though....

I found the manual online at orphancameras.com

I may take the Ecx -1 and it's more slightly more compact but equally full-featured cousin, the Maxima 70L (or Li? it is an L with a dot, probably the symbol for "fuzzy logic"?) out for a test drive this weekend, for a side-by-side comparison, perhaps.

My other new/old Maxima, the 1350Ti, has a nice feature that I wish more cameras had, a "mode dial" (really more of a toggle) around the shutter button that allows mode changing without having to push any buttons.
